The Canadian Statesman Bowmanville, Saturday, February 13,1993 11 Lake Scugog Winter Walleye Season to Be Shortened in '93 The Ministry of Natural Resources is proposing to shorten the ice fishing season as a first step towards improving improving the quality of walleye fishing in Lake Scugog and protecting the naturally naturally reproducing population. Ministry information collected over the past 10 years and increasing complaints from anglers indicated a need for further controls to reduce winter harvest levels. In response to these concerns, the Ministry of Natural Resources conducted conducted a public meeting in Port Perry on October 7, 1992 to discuss the state of the fishery and to obtain public input input to assist in choosing the most acceptable acceptable management option(s) to maintain the fishery.. Local angling groups and other interested members of the public were also consulted. A total of 139 written responses were returned to the Ministry of Natural Natural Resources. Seventy-nine percent agreed with imposing more restrictive regulations to attempt to improve the quality of walleye fishing. Six different regulation change options options were proposed. Shortening the winter season was the most frequently selected option with 73% supporting this action. The second most favoured option was reducing catch and possession possession limits. The reasons given for supporting supporting a shortened winter season and reducing catch and possession limits Tree Time Tom Farmer, Senior Resource Technician Spring tree planting season is fast approaching, however, there is still time to order your trees. The Ministry forest nursery at Orono reports that all species, except European larch, are still available. If you own five or more acres of property free of buildings you are eligible to buy nursery stock from a provincial nursery. Tree prices are ten cents per tree, plus a ten dollar administrative fee per order, plus all applicable taxes. Minimum Minimum order is 100 trees. Orders for more than 100 trees should be in multiples multiples of 50. No fewer than 50 trees can be ordered for any one species. For an application form and/or more information on tree planting, contact your local Ministry of Natural Resources office. included a reduction in the walleye harvest, minimal impact on the local economy, does not close the winter season completely, and ease of enforcement. enforcement. Banning ice huts and a reduction from two lines to one received limited support, however, almost half of respondents respondents were against these two options. options. Implementing size limits and closing the winter season were also rejected rejected by more than half of the respondents. respondents. Based on input received, the Ministry Ministry of Natural Resources is proposing proposing to shorten the winter season starting starting in the fall. Fishing for all species on Lake Scugog would close on November November 15th, 1993, similar to the other other Kawartha Lakes. The walleye and panfish season - would re-open on January January 1 and close at the end of February, February, 1994. The second most preferred option (reduce the catch and possession limits) limits) is also being considered. Howev er, this regulation change would also impact the summer fishery and some anglers have asked for a similar reduction reduction of catch limits on the other Kawartha Kawartha Lakes. More public input will be sought before this option is implemented. implemented. The proposed season change should result in harvest reduction of between 10-15% and will provide more protection to this important fishery. fishery. "We were very pleased with the quality and number of responses received.", received.", said "David Bell, a Ministry biologist in Lindsay. "Anglers were very concerned with ensuring the fishery. fishery. is maintained and the proposed regulation changes will assist in doing this." Woodlot Owners Warned of Cut and Run Logging Scam Bob Penwell, Management Forester If you are a woodlot owner in Northumberland, Victoria or Peterborough Peterborough Counties, you may be approached approached by loggers wanting to make a quick profit at the expense of your woodlot. They will normally offer a large sum of money to cut trees larger than 18 inches in diameter measured at one foot above the ground. Once into the bush, trees of any diameter may be cut and removed without your knowledge. This practice of "hygrad- ing" or "cut and run" means only the best quality trees will be taken, in many cases reducing the woodlot to a shambles. Hygrading is especially evident evident where no tree cutting bylaws exist. exist. The result may be less than fair market value for your trees, and a woodlot with little commercial value for many years to come. Most logging operators are honest and responsible citizens, but there are a few unscmpulous individuals who are trying to make a quick dollar at your expense. It is these individuals who are responsible responsible for the recent phone calls to the Ministry from landowners who have had the misfortune to deal with them. Many unsuspecting landowners have been taken advantage of due to the lure of very high prices offered for standing trees, especially native sugar (hard) maple and red oak. However, since only the best quality trees will be removed from the woodlot, the logger logger can pay what appears to be a very high price. If the bush is harvested properly, with the future in mind, your short-term gain will be smaller but your long-term return from the forest much larger. The Ministry of Natural Resources suggests you call you local M.N.R. office office to discuss any logging plans you may have. The Ministry can provide you with impartial sound advice in the marketing of trees from your woodlot, including a free of charge tree marking marking service. Remember, woodlot hygraders are only interested in maximizing their profit at your expense!
