Bob Shafer, owner and operator of the Tyrone Mill, will be the guest speaker. He will be relating accounts of some historic old mills that have a renowned place in our heritage. The program takes place in the Lions Room of the Newcastle Community Hall. It begins at 7:30 p.m. A collection will be taken and refreshments will be served. • CUSHION CONCERT - The next performance in the Hampton Cushion Concert Series is at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 6, in the Hampton Public School. CONCERT SERIES.-- The St. Paul's United Church performing arts series series concludes next month with a performance by Michael Danso entitled "White Tie and Tails." Billed as "The Complete Entertainer," he is equally at home as a singer, dancer and actor. He has received rave reviews for concerts concerts at Ontario Place and Roy Thomson Hall. He has performed with symphony symphony orchestras, at nightclubs and in musicals. The concert is taking place at 7:30 p.m. on March 10 in the Bowmanville High School auditorium. GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY -- The Whitby-Oshawa Branch (Region of Durham) of the Ontario Genealogical Society meets Tuesday, March 2nd, at Henry St. High School in Whitby. This meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. and the guest speaker is Nora Herd, Community Archivist at the Oshawa Sydenham _ Museum. She will discuss the holdings of the archives at the Oshawa Sydenham Sydenham Museum. All meetings are free and open to the public. Students at Durham Christian High School had the dress rehearsal of their version ot j.KX Tolkien's book "The Hobbit" called "There and Back Again: A Hobbit s Holiday on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at their school. Students from a number of area schools and from Oshawa were the audience audience for the play which lasted about three hours. Here, Jodi Bosch portrays Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, hobbit, and Tenehta Gjaltema plays Kili, a dwarf. The play, adapted from the f.R.R. Tolkien book "The Hobbit" iy the OAC Theatre students at Durham Christian High School, is he result of many hours of reading, scripting dialogue, and putting together together a 44-page script. The students adapted the book into a theatrical production after Theatre Arts teacher Kathleen Touw was unable to rent the play from a company in the United States holding holding the copyright. Putting together the play since November has been "a lot of work," said student editor Dan Binnema. Students were assigned to read the book in mid-October 1992 and began writing dialogue for the scripts for their Theatre Arts classes with Mrs. Touw, who is also the director director of the play. The result of approximately 50 to 60 hours of hard work by the 10 OAC Theatre Arts students and numerous numerous other students who have joined the cast on stage and off, could be seen on Feb. 25 (Thursday), (Thursday), 26 (Friday) and 27 (Saturday). There arc 30 students who have on-stage appearances and 25 stu dents working as the backstage crew. The crew backstage includes those doing make-up, sound technicians, technicians, lighting crew, stage crew and musicians. In order to get some experience in front of an audience, the cast performed performed before a number of students from area schools who were invited to watch the dress rehearsal on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
