Each member takes a turn at being Table Topics Master at the meetings, and presents each Toastmaster Toastmaster with a topic on which to speak for one minute. This on the spot speech, like a good paragraph, must have an introduction, body, and conclusion. conclusion. The topic chosen by Toastmaster Broughton at this meeting was on "confusion". At one time or another all people have created it, or get caught up in it. One by one Toastmasters Toastmasters were given a word on which to stand up and talk about. Some of the topic words were: Geometric pitch, Iaminitis, and Dihedral. There was some particularly good responses to the topics given, with ingenious and humorous responses. Half the fun dur : ing table topics is listening to the speaker talk for one minute about a subject they may know nothing about. It's great practice learning to think on your feet, and it puts fun and laughter into the meetings. Especially afterwards afterwards when the speaker finds out the real meaning of the topic. At the end of the session, the award for the best table topics speaker was won by Shcr Leetooze. The usual 10 minute break was extended extended to 20 minutes to allow Toastmasters Toastmasters to enjoy a belated Valentine's snack, due to a snowstorm the Tuesday Tuesday before. Each'member brought in a, special dessert of their own making, and it was certainly evident it was enjoyed enjoyed by all the members. After the break we were led into the prepared speech portion of the meeting by Toastmaster Marg Kropf. During this portion of the meeting, speakers get the opportunity to present speeches of lengths vatying from 5 to 20 minutes. Toastmasters take turns speaking in front of the club, and bc- . cause practice makes perfect the more speeches the better the speaker becomes. becomes. There is a Toastmaster at the meet- <5 paRTicipacnon ing that evaluates the speech and offers offers constructive points to help the speaker to improve on his/her presentation. presentation. The. first speech was given by Toastmaster L. Holder, it was her icebreaker icebreaker speech. This is the first time she stood in front of the club and said a speech. Probably the hardest of them all to do, but she did an admiral job of it, and she won the "Best Speaker Award." The second speech was given by Toastmaster Sher Leetooze. Her speech was on how to build a strong club. She pointed out the positive points for bringing in new members to Toastmasters. The new members would give new ideas, and vigour to the club. All in all a very good speech given by our chapter president, Toastmaster Toastmaster Leetooze. The Bowmanville Toastmasters are members of Toastmasters International, International, which is an organization dedicated to helping individuals learn the arts of speaking, listening, and thinking.
