Are We Having Stress Yet? by Lisa Bryn Rundle Yes! We all constantly undergoing stress of one type or another. And today, today, the first day of exams for B.H.S. students, was no exception. Many of us are certainly under pressure. We do need a certain amount of stress to allow allow us to function in our daily lives, and some of us even appear to thrive on it, but whether we seem to enjoy it or not, we are all negatively affected by the stress of everyday life. It can make us sick and unhappy. Fortunately, Fortunately, we can control, to a certain extent, the amount of stress in our lives, but first we must identify some causes. Daily life in a modem society presents us with constant demands and problems that must be dealt with within within a limited period of time. In our great quest for the betterment of our lives through technology and urban development, development, we have sacrificed many things including our ability to relax. Nowadays, Nowadays, just about everything can cause stress. The drive to.work or school, interactions interactions with friends and family, and the pressure we put on ourselves can all add up to a tension-filled life. Most stressors in our daily lives are psychological.* psychological.* They can stem from poor self-esteem, feelings of being out of control or alienated, and from societal pressures. Women, for example, on top of all the other stresses of life, are constantly constantly confronted with images of unachievable unachievable beauty for which they are expected expected to strive. Similarly, men are often made to feel as though material wealth will make them successful and desirable persons. When we can't live up to these impossible goals we end up internalizing a lot of stress. Most psychological psychological stressors are recurrent and based on perceptions derived from past experience. For example, a person who has done poorly in exams before might find the experience much more stressful stressful then someone who habitually docs well. It's hard to change these points of view that are so ingrained in us, but it is possible. Positive thinking can help reduce the stress-caused by worrying about things beyond our control. When asked which physical symptoms symptoms or illnesses could be caused by 1 stress a doctor will tell you "anything and everything." Pain' and discomfort in many areas of our bodies can be directly directly caused by stress, and illnesses we already have can be made worse. The purpose of stress, physiologically Ministry Changes View on Diploma Encouraged by possible litigation, .. the Ontario Ministry of Education (MOE) has reversed an earlier decision decision denying authority to Durham Christian High School to grant diploma diploma credits. The ministry approved two courses in religious studies offered offered at the Grade 9 and Grade 10 levels levels as applicable towards the completion completion of the requirements. for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). The settlement ends 12 years of refusal refusal by the MOE to allow Durham Christian High School and seven other high schools, all members of the Ontario Ontario Alliance of Christian School, the same right as the Roman Catholic Separate Schools. Since 1978 Catholic • Schools have issued two credits for religious religious studies toward the OSSD. Since Independent Christian high schools are distinct from the public system in the same way as the Separate Separate schools, Christian high officials felt they were equally entitled to issue . credits towards the Ontario Ministiy diploma. The MOE policies did not address the Alliance high schools, and when asked to consider allowing these credits, credits, official quoted recent court decisions decisions to limit religion in the public schools. Since no clear policy existed on the matter, seven high school principals principals proceeded to. follow the practice of the Catholic schools. The corresponding corresponding reaction on the part of Ministry Ministry officials to tenninate the signing authority of the principals led to court action by the Alliance for its member schools. The Alliance requested: approval of its religious studies program on a non-guideline credit status; the restoration restoration of signing authority for principals; principals; and a declaration that the MOE policies on education about religion in the public schools do not apply to independent independent Christian schools. The settlement reached on Feb. 8, 1993 grants all three requests. speaking, is to gear our bodies to respond respond to an emergency. Our adrenal and pituitary glands produce hormones that ready us to fight and give us strength. All of our energy is gathered in our arms, legs and jaws and the other other body functions are turned off. Everything can be affected. Our immune immune system, our digestive system, our ability to sleep and our sex drive can all be shut down, leading to many and varied physical symptoms caused by stress. For the first human beings on earth the physical reactions caused by stress would have been helpful by extra extra power in our jaws will rarely help .us when we are in the middle of exams or if we've been in a car accident. Our society has changed so quickly that our bodies haven't had time to catch up. Now we must force ourselves to deal with our stressors before they end up killing us. 'There arc many ways available to help reduce the stress in our lives but . we have to make the time. Often the 1 first thing we cut out when things get. Mr. Taylor, our principal and resident expert expert in the field of time management, says , that you must not only block out the time necessary to do the things you have to do but also the things you find enjoyable, He suggests using a planning planning calendar that keeps everything in one place. That way you can plan out rewards for yourself for accomplishing things. If you don't, you may find yourself dreading looking through your book because "...you see a thousand things to do but nothing enjoyable," says Mr. Taylor. , Student services can also help us to Courtice Secondary with a message reduce stress by looking at the specific for the community's youth to get incauses incauses and attempting to deal with formed and get active, them. Junior Cougars Strike Gold! Anyone who has gambled on Pro Line, and lost, knows that all predictions predictions don't come true. Yes, I made a list of predictions last week about our Junior boys basketball team defeating Vanicr by 50 points and our Senior team making it to the LOSSA finals. The Seniors? We lost to Brock in the semis. I guess that it doesn't pay to boast. But hey! Our juniors kicked some serious butt in what I call a championship week! The Junior boys basketball team played their first playoff game on Tuesday at home against Vanicr. This was a team that had not won a game all year, yet still felt confident that they would give our juniors a run, and they did! It was scary for the first half as Vanicr kept it close but Courtice battled back to win it in the second half, 52-36. Their next battle took place on Thursday as the Central Chiefs rolled into town. This was another another squeeker as our juniors didn't score until five minutes into the first quarter. They eventually took over the lead and the game, winning it, 42-31. This is unlike the juniors to play a tight defensive game, but it proved to be the edge. High scorers were Basil Dawkins with 15 points and. Brian Dawkins adding 14 points. This was the big test, but could they take the LOSSA title on Saturday at Durham College? You bet! They defeated G.L. Roberts in the final, 41-33. This is the first LOSSA basketball championship since 1980. Next stop: DYSSA chain-, pionships at Sutton on Friday. Good luck, Cougars. In other sporting events at Courtice, Courtice, our Midget girls volleyball team V played at Brock on Wednesday for the LOSSA championship tournament. Although they were ranked second in league play, they lost a tie-breaker to Port Perry placing them in the semifinal semifinal against Brock. In the third and final final game, Courtice blew a 13-11 lead to lose the game 15-13. They failed to move on to the DYSSA championship as only the top two go on. Our wrestlers also competed for metals at the DYSSA championship held in Markham this Thursday. Mike Francis was heavily favoured to win the gold in his weight class and he prevailed. This feisty young talent has a lot going for him and maybe be placed on the provincial team in the near future. With out Junior basketball team winning the LOSSA finals on Saturday, Saturday, our school is on fire! What could possibly top this achievement? Perhaps Perhaps a DYSSA championship?
