Mark Your Calendars For "3 on 3" Basketball You might recall that at the conclusion of our 3 on 3 basketball tournament tournament that ran in June of last year, I asked our readers to give us a wake- up call if there was enough interest to host it again. Well, the alarm just went off. It's back. And this time, we hope to make it bigger and even better than the last time. The 2nd Annual Canadian Statesman 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament will mark its return to Bowmanville High School on Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8. A registration form, giving an outline of the tournament, can be found on the sport pages. For the over 140 kids between the ages of 10-18 who participated last year, the format for this year's tournament is virtually unchanged. All teams will once again be guaranteed three games in the tournament, tournament, with trophies awaiting the winners of the 'A' and 'B' Divisions, and medallions for the 'C' and 'D' Champions. Our famous registration package is in the midst of being put together. Last year, we were very fortunate through the generosity of our sponsors to put together an impressive package for each participant, which included included a tank top, free slice of pizza and a reduction in cost for a movie or video rental. We're hoping to put together a package that will match, or quite possibly exceed last year's bag of goodies. Refreshments, in the form of the famous McDonald's Orange Bowl will be available all weekend. One slight change we will make this year, is that double the amount will be ordered to ensure the Orange Bowl is full throughout the weekend. ■ At last year's tournament, I asked parents how_they could afford to quench the thirst of these kids. On the opening evening of the tournament, six gallons of juice didn't last two hours. The following day, we went through seven gallons by noon. The only significant change this year will be the NBA-style 3-point competition. In hopes of creating a little more interest, there will be a division division for both the boys and the girls this year. The competition will be on Saturday at noon, and will carry a registration fee of a paltry $5. Registrations Registrations for the competition will be accepted during the tournament. The two-day tournament will likely get underway Friday night around 6:00 p.m. and will run until approximately 10:00 p.m. Depending on the number of entries, Saturday's action may get underway at 8:00 a.m., with the last basket to be sunk around 5:00 p.m. One aspect of the tournament that we are proud of is the registration cost for the weekend. It will remain the same as last year at $40 per team, which is quite a bargain considering four players comprise each team. We will again try to give all of the kids top value for their dollar. The registration deadline is Wednesday, April 21. Team captains will be notified with the starting time of their first game once the draw is complete. complete. As teams begin to register for the various divisions, we will keep everyone everyone updated with information in The Canadian Statesman. I'll get one of those looks when she reads this, but I can't help but mention the past weekend the missus had at a Pro-Am Racquetball tournament tournament in Whitby. She strung together four consecutive wins (two of them in the fifth and deciding game) to win the overall championship in the Ladies' B Division. Of course, I have cancelled any further games wc had scheduled to play against one another in fear of being another one of her long line of victims. . v't y l'-tti' ■■ ■ 1 ■ - «'k ' *.v ■ 1 !■(•>; ' i.«. ■ it ■ ; 1 • ■ J ])(«•;> i » )*in v*>m i >i-.: .
