You are also probably thinking that there are many things that could make life easier for you right now and that exercise is not one of them. Well ... you would be sutprised to know what moderate and consistent aerobic activity, in particular, can do for you. Aerobic exercise occurs when your major muscle groups (i.e. arms and/or legs) are moving for àn extended extended period of time without stopping. Some examples of aerobic activity are running, swimming, biking, brisk walking and aerobic dance. Aerobic capacity is how well the heart and lungs bring oxygen to the muscles. and then how efficiently the muscles use the oxygen to generate energy during sustained exercise. As an adjunct to a low-fat, high fi- bre diet, aerobic exercise can help you stay healthy and live longer. It builds a stronger heart and lungs, prevents or delays many declines associated with aging, aids in disease prevention, bolsters bolsters resistance to colds and flus, speeds up your metabolism and thus bums fat throughout the day (even when you are not exercising!), improves improves muscle tone, aids in strengthening strengthening bones, and increases stamina for other daily activities. Not only does aerobic exercise make your body feel and work a lot better but it will lift your spirits as well. Yes, exercise is a tonic for the soul. It elevates self- confidence, dissipates anxiety and chases away the blues. In fact, when you exercise your brain produces substances substances (called endorphins and enkephalins) enkephalins) that raise your pain threshold threshold and give you a "natural high" feeling. Once you make (moderate aerobic) exercise a consistent part of your lifestyle, you will not want to do without it, even once you regain employment. employment. You will see! ■ Healthy exercise is not painful. It should not hurt at all. In fact, if you are not enjoying yourself while you exercise than you are probably exercising exercising too hard. The "no pain, no gain" philosophy of exercise is passé. Research shows that you don't have to exercise vigorously in order to benefit from it. Furthermore, you don't have to join a health club or purchase lots of equipment in order to" get or keep fit. Who has extra money for these luxuries luxuries when unemployed? You can do any activity that you like doing as long as you keep moving, without stopping, for at least 30 minutes. Of all fitness activities, walking is the easiest, safest and cheapest. It's, also easy on your knees, ankles and back. You can walk in every season of the year as long as you dress appropriately. appropriately. Walking is pleasurable alone or with a companion. You can walk with your children. Put you baby in a stroller stroller and walk with your baby! The hardest part is starting an exercise exercise program and making it into a habit. However, if you can just push yourself enough and get past this point, you will be on your way! If you are just beginning an exercise pro gram, start slowly. Go only as fast and as far as you are comfortable. Go at your own pace. Gradually increase your speed and your distance. Do your chosen activity every day or every second day if you can. Let yourself relax relax and let this be a special time for you. Problem solving seems to work better when you are in a relaxed state of mind such as after a good night's sleep or when exercising moderately. Don't forget to stretch! Stretch after after about 10 minutes of doing your chosen activity. (Your muscles should be warmed up before you stretch them.) Don't bounce when you stretch and hold each stretch for about 10 or 15 seconds. Only stretch as far as you are comfortable. It shouldn't hurt to stretch.
