' ; Ajax in 5-1 Contest on Saturday The Bowmanvillc Kinsmen minor bantams began their York-Simcoc playoffs against Ajax by defeating them 5-1 in Darlington on Saturday, March 6. The Toros looked very strong against the Ajax team and the result of the game was never in doubt. Greg MeMurter opened the scoring in the first period when he took a pass from Ryan Dunnigan and fired it past the Ajax goalie. Ajax got one back before before the end of the period on the power power play when the defence got caught flat footed and Cameron Millar, in the Toro net, had no chance on the shot. In the second period, the Toros played a tough, hard-hitting game and completely shut down the Ajax offence. offence. Meanwhile, the forwards were dominating the Ajax players and were unlucky not to score on numerous good chances. They did, however, score twice more to take a comfortable comfortable 3-1 lead into the third period. Scoring were Darryl Cook and Mike Ferguson. Assists went to Jason Bray, Nick Hand, Dunnigan and Ferguson. The third period was a repeat of the second, with the Toros scoring two more goals to make the final score 5-1. With three regulars missing from the lineup, the acquisition of Jason Bray certainly helped the Toros, as he contributed his size to the defence and also added one assist. The goals for Beaver were by Nathan Nathan Wright with a hat-trick, Matthew Best with two goals and Matthew Beech with one goal. Justin Andrews looked like Grant Fuhr in goal for Beaver. Justin McKee also played a strong game in goal for Skylight. The coaches for Beaver Lumber would like to thank their players for' such a strong effort. Destinations Going to Ontario Finals -The Knox Christian School girls' volleyball team emerged as champions of their own tournament held March 5-6, when they beat John Knox Christian of Brampton in the finals. The team concluded the year with an 18-2 record. Team members include, front ro.w, (1-r): Jennifer Rekker, Amy Marquis, Angela Angela Reitsma, Kathy Bonsma, and Becky DePrine. In the back row, (1-r) are: Diana Helmius, Shirley Wes- sels, Yvonne Sikma, Julie VanGinhoven, Lori Haan, and Jeanette Ewald (coach). Absent was Jessica Hiemstra. Strong Showing for Bell Canada Girls The Destinations To Go major pcc- wee Toros dug deep and came out on top against the Vaughan Rangers, advancing advancing themselves to the All-Ontario finals. In the semi-final series, the Toros were defeated in game one 5-4, but then came roaring back and took three games straight. In regular season play, the Vaughan Vaughan Rangers had- been undefeated. The Toros outskated, outplayed, and outshot the Vaughan Rangers while the Toro goalies, Scott Sawyer and David Yellowlecs, were unbeatable. In the 'A' division semi-final game, Liberty Mutual again faced a house league opponent. Bragg's Bird Seed opened the scoring at 1:41 of the first with an unassisted goal by Nicholas Nicholas Boyd. Liberty answered at the 4:00 minute mark with a goal by Jamie Jordan, Jordan, assisted by Scan Lefort and Ryan Pctrich. Chris Bcnctcau scored the winner in the second period which earned Liberty the right to play in the 'A' Division final game. The final game, played Sunday morning, had Liberty Mutual playing Whitby Smiling Drillers. Liberty quickly jumped out in front with a goal by Ryan Pctrich from Adam Wilkes. Whitby came back in the second second to tic it up. Arrive at the arena well before game time. For safety, make sure you have your First Aid kit and all its supplies. Ensure that your players have all equipment on properly and insist they complete a proper warm-up. Also make sure that referees, timekeepers, scorekccpcrs and other officials are present and ready to go. Have a short meeting with your players before the game. Stress only a few points of instruction and encourage them to relax, have fun and do their best. During the game, remain cool behind the bench by not shouting at officials and opponents. Be positive and enthusiastic with your players, and give corrective feedback in a constructive, quiet manner. Change lines frequently to let every player participate. Always set a good example for your players. After the game, insist that all players and staff shake hands with opponents and officials. Meet briefly with your players to offer encouragement and positive feedback, and ask for input regarding team strengths, attitude and areas for improvement. Make announcements about upcoming games and practices, and attempt to say somethig positive to each player before leaving.
