Town of Newcastle Council will be seeking nominations for this award from its Volunteer Recognition Committee. The victory was won through the efforts of Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, and Henrietta Muir Edwards. These five outstanding women fought a tough legal and political battle to have women considered as persons under the British North America Act, states a brochure available at the town's Clerk's Department. The awards are presented to women women who "have made an outstanding contribution towards promoting the equality of women in Canada," states the letter from Ms Collins. Some of the 76 recipients' names are Mary Two-Axe Early, an aboriginal aboriginal women's rights activist; Marie Hamilton, a champion of the advancement advancement of black women and Therese Casgrain, an advocate of women's right to vote in Quebec. The brochure also cites the criteria for the awards.
