4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, April 7,1993 Clubs and Organizations Rotary Club Learns How to Make the Best Use of Time by Lorraine Manfredo Time is a concept that everyone seems to understand but few are able to describe. According to time management expert, expert, Gerry Vanschepen, the most productive productive people know that time is much more than just à period between events. They have learned that "Time is Life." "And, if you waste Time, you waste Life," Vanschepen goes on. Mr. Vanschepen is a corporate sales representative for Family Tmst Real Estate in Whitby. He also conducts conducts seminars and workshops for business professionals on Effective Time Management. He was at the Bowmanville Rotary Club's Annual Rural /Urban meeting on April 1st. This year, the Bowmanville Rotary Club invited members of the local business community as well as their rural friends to the noon luncheon. As guest speaker, Mr. Vanschepen related some interesting truths about time and offered some valuable advice on how to manage it. He said his own interest in "time" grew after the death of his father. And then, at age 60, he was reminded that the average lifespan for a Canadian male is 74. He now advises others to make the most of the time that they have been given. "Everyone has 24 hours in their day. No one has more and no one has less. In that, we are beautifully equal. The only difference is in what we do with that time," he said Leaders can accomplish a great deal in 24 hours. Others find it hard to achieve anything, and many times that is simply because they cannot plan ahead for the next day or the next week, he said. "You need to be organized and disciplined." disciplined." An inspirational verse Vanschepen uses in workshops encourages people to set aside enough time to enjoy all life has to offer at home, work and in the community. "Take time to Work - it is the price of success, ... Take time to Play - it is the secret of perpetual youth,... Take time for God - It is Life's only lasting investment." And, if time truly is money, the guest noted, then people should use it and cash in on it. But to ensure the highest return one must plan ahead. Personal Time Analysis Sheets Gerry Vanschepen Awards for Veteran Big Brothers Volunteers •lÉttSÉÉÉ were made available to the audience in order to pinpoint their biggest "time wasting" activities and adjust their schedules. Business owners should take note of how much time they devote to personal personal pursuits, including their family, their business, and on spiritual aspects aspects of their life. They should figure out what they spend too much time on and what they spend too little time on. For instance, the guest said, many, business managers have discovered that the "open door" policy is, in fact, a big time-waster as it is usually the least productive workers who take advantage. advantage. ' . * Absenteeism costs business an estimated estimated $200 billion a year, he noted. Time-related factors contribute greatly to this high rate. His parting advice to Rotarians and their guests was to learn to "prioritize" "prioritize" duties to the family, work, and the community. He suggests drawing up a schedule and sticking to it. 4-H Happenings By Darlene Gauthier Bored on weeknights. Well, read . this and I'll tell you how not be be 1 bored.
