Russell Honey last week, and both agreed that the time for a political change today is similar to that of over thirty years ago. Mr. Honey won the Durham riding a a Liberal jn 1962, defeating the Conservative incumbent, incumbent, and continued to serve Durham in Ottawa over the next ten years, hi assessing Malcolm's chances today, Honey commented, "I believe you can win the riding as the Liberal candidate." candidate." Mr. Honey noted that in 1962 he believed he could win because of his profile from a previous political campaign campaign and the need in Canada for change after several years of Diefenbaker Diefenbaker government. Honey's optimism optimism was not shared by all at the time. "The mood of the people in 1962 was one of disbelief, in my chances of winning." Malcolm noted that there are similar. sentiments in Durham today, although he too is confident that he can win this riding for the Liberals again. Glenn sees his earlier campaign for Mayor of Scu- gog and previous political experience as assets in this latest bid for public office. ■ _ . From their discussions, Malcolm and Honey agreed that the parallels between the politics of the past and present in Durham are unmistakable. Not only is the major issue of the day comparable (national dissatisfaction with current government policies and direction), but the riding of Durham was and is seen as a swing riding with limitations in representation by the local Conservative in Ottawa. The two Liberal candidates themselves themselves bear striking similarities. Both Honey and Malcolm come from farming backgrounds, and are seen as* likable, populist straight shooters. Mr. Honey went on to say "The Malcolms Malcolms have politics in the blood and they are good at it (politics)." Just as Honey credits his earlier, winning of the Durham riding to his diligent work within the community, Malcolm Malcolm has been actively soliciting support support for the Liberal party and his own candidacy for nearly a year. While in parliament, Mr. Honey served as Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture. Commenting Commenting on his achievements during this time, he noted "I recognized the need for farm marketing boards, and efforts to these ends were reinforced by the Malcolms I knew in my own riding." Glenn Malcolm recognizes the vital contribution that marketing boards continue to play in the stability stability of the farm economy. Following his political career, Honey returned to law and was appointed and served as a judge. He has now retired and lives in the Belleville area. While there are no guarantees in politics, many Liberals in Durham agree with Russell Honey's assessment assessment of Malcolm's chances of "repeating "repeating history" with a liberal win in Durham in the next federal election.
