til By Brad Kelly Mosport Track Promises More for Less in 1993 With a wide array of sporting events for area fans to choose from, organizations organizations have been forced to review their line of thinking when it comes to attracting the disposable spending of those fans. Certainly, the best way to ensure attendance is to swing the gates or doors open, and let the people view the event for free. But, then again, nothing is really for free. Even without having to pay admission prices, there is still the expense of transportation to and from the event. And, you might throw in a few extra bucks if food is purchased. Then, there is the price you pay when arriving home late at night after attending the particular sport, and having to rise up out of bed early the next morning to be to work on time. With this is mind, groups have realized the need to market their partie ular sport, with hopes that added promotions will result in increased attendance. attendance. It's a situation that the Oshawa Generals faced with the departure of Eric Lindros to the NHL. Attendance at home games decreased, but they still attempted to give fans their money's worth. Designating an entire section to receive a free pizza should the Generals Generals win, presenting a dozen roses to a lucky fan, and delivering a 10 foot giant submarine to an unsuspecting soul are just a few of the ideas that they have concocted with their sponsors. It makes for an entertaining evening for the fans Which is the theory that officials at Mosport Park are using for their upcoming season of car racing at both their road course and oval speedway. speedway. They are providing their loyal spectators with much more for less during during the 1993 season. A unique Mosport Millions lottery which offers a chance to win a share of more than $3 million in prizes will be in effect in hopes of attracting fans to the speedway. "With these economic conditions, we've got to be very realistic in our event packaging and pricing," explains Mosport Park President Harvey Hudes in a recent press release. " We're determined to do everything we can to make our events as attractive, attractive, and affordable, as we possibly can. The packages that we've put together for this season represent the best values in motorsport." The Mosport Millions lottery offers cash prizes and other awards to spectators. Lottery cards will be distributed without charge to each fan And, if their numbers match the official finishing order of the first five cars in the feature race, they drive away with a cool million dollars. At the Mosport International Speedway, $10,000 a week will be available available to be won, with the same rules as those for the road course in effect. If the jackpot isn't won on one weekend, it will be added to the pot for the next weekend. The pot will continue to accumulate until somebody wins. "Over the years, we've enjoyed strong support from a loyal group of spectators," said Hudes. "We've also been successful in introducing thousands of newcomers to this sport. We want to do everything possible to keep those spectators coming back in the coming season." The track is rich in tradition. Now they hope to make somebody rich for sharing their tradition of excellence. iBowmanville Kinsmen Bantams End Season at Thornhill Tourney The Bowmanville minor bantam crest right at the beginning of the peri- Toro hockey team, sponsored by the od meant that the Toros again had to Bowmanville Kinsmen Club, rounded press for the tying goal and were un- out their season by taking part in the lucky on a couple of breakaways not 6th Annual Tournament in Thornhill to score. And soon, they will become acquainted acquainted with him again when he appears to get fitted for another championship ring. Saturday night, at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, Veltman's Buffalo Bandits won their second consecutive Major Indoor Lacrosse League championship, posting an' exciting 13-12 victory over the Phii adelphia Wings.- ' In last year's final against the Wings, played at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, the Bandits won the title title with an 11-10 victory in sudden- death overtime. Saturday's win was the third such championship in a row for Veltman. Last summer, as a member of the Brantford Excelsiors, his team captured the Mann Cup senior lacrosse title. It was this type of experience that Veltman feels was a key ingredient to Buffalo defending their title. "We have a lot of players with championship experience," said the teacher at Durham Christian High School. 4 'Last year's win carried us over into this year. We never panicked panicked even when we were down 12- 11. We rallied and said: "what arc we going to do about it?" Fans who packed the arena in Buffalo to cheer on their Bandits were treated to an entertaining final. Neither team held more than a three goal lead throughout die game. Buffalo held an 8-6 lead at the half, and increased it to 9-6 before Philadelphia reeled off five straight goals to reclaim the lead. Tied at 11 with three minutes remaining remaining in the game, Philadelphia went up by one with a power play goal. Ironically, it was Veltman who was in the penalty box. "I thought I was going to be the goat," he said. But, Buffalo fought back and tied the game a couple of minutes later, creating a flurry of action in the dying dying seconds. With 30 seconds left, Darris Kil- gour broke the tic with a power play goal, giving the Bandits a lead they wouldn't relinquish. "Philadelphia played a good game, wc just came out with a victory victory in this one," said Veltman, who collected three assists on the night. "They didn't play us any different different than they did last year, Wc were able to hold them off every time they got some momentum." Buffalo was led by league scoring scoring champion, John Tavares, who scored four goals and collected game MVP honors. Paul Gait, who finished second to Tavares in the scoring race, had three goals for Philadelphia. The win marked the 18th in a row for Buffalo, dating back lo last year. It was also the second lime this year that they defeated Philadelphia. Philadelphia. Earlier In me season, they prevailed prevailed with a 12-11 victory, handing Philadelphia their only loss of the season. With another MILL championship championship ring on order, Veltman will be Christian School for the "next five -weeks. A date of June 26 has been set aside. With' wedding plans consuming much of his time, a commitment hasn't been made yet to return to Brampton this summer to play senior senior lacrosse and take another run at the Mann Cup. "I'll have to talk to the coach and see what we can work out," he said.
