Dr. Finlay had worked in Mission hospital at Hazel- ton, B.C. and was sponsored by United United Church of Canada. Before coming to our areas she had resided outside Montreal (near Oka). Of course working in these remote regions in B.C. is a great challenge, where areas are only accessible from water or air. Susan explained the situation, "You either already love the outdoors, or will soon get to love it." The population population is mainly Indian and everyone knows each other! The hospital is private but publicly publicly funded! The hospital staff are very dedicated and also work at every type of job as needed! Our guest showed excellent slides and several interesting interesting displays. Thelma Vagg thanked our guest and presented her with flowers. A hearty round of applause attested to her excellent presentation. Horticulture Plant Show The hobby and craft and plant show of Orono Horticulture Society was held in Main hall of Orono United United Church on Thursday, April 15. Excellent attendance and meeting opened with singing of "0 Canada" and welcome from president Shelley Etmanski. Following a short business period and announcements, Loma Atkins Atkins introduced our guest for evening, evening, Mrs. Bertha Barnes. Last year, Bertha won a very prestigious award, "The North American Achievement Award." Her topic for this meeting, "Gladiolus". She brought a very colorful colorful pictorial display of glads, all sizes etc. She stressed the importance of buying only good glad corms for excellent excellent bloom for summer. Be sure to spray the bulbs and discard any damaged damaged ones, cleanliness is absolutely essential! Be sure to grow some pix- colas (small glads for show!) Bertha also gave excellent tips on growing good mums, and stressed the need of pinching back in early July, in order to have better blooms. Also discard any real late bloomers as waste of time and space. We gardeners pass on our knowledge knowledge to others, that's how we all improve improve our plantings. The hobby and craft displays good as usual, very cute baby quilts, afghans, afghans, needlework, dressed dolls, scrap books and wicker work. District Director especially thanked Mayor Harare, and Gordon Mills for their special interest in our endeavours. Bert Card brought greetings from O.H.A. and told us he'd come to Canada in 1954, and he and Gordon Mills were from same areas in England! England! Another familiar guest Barbara Weese, O.M.A.F. Anne described described the annual District Award and each year some deserving member member receives this, but this time an entire entire society gets this attractive award. Our very own "Orono Society" for their very dedicated leadership in landscaping the Orono Cenotaph in 1992. Loma Atkins, as president last year led in the original plans, and saw the overall plan completed in" October 1992. This was really a Community endeavour, as so many contributed to the cost. Fundraising events were all well attended by Community. Congratulations, Orono Society! Louise Johnson, Secretary for district, district, gave roll call and all 12 societies societies answered the roll call. Bert Dickie Dickie gave the Auditors and Treasurer's reports, and all encouraging. Anne announced the contributors of draw prizes and introduced a brand new product for gardeners, called "Muscle Mud" and showed her plant growing in new product and really excellent results. Allister Crawford, a well-known gardener, and lie specializes in pond and water gardens, has his own Solarium Solarium and has travelled widely. His topic for speaking "Stress in your plants." Some conditions that cause stress, light, too much or too little, soil, drainage, air pollution etc. Allister told us "Horticulture is just not a hobby but a science." Craft Show Held in Orono Those in charge of Orono Horticulture's Craft Show last Thursday were just getting things organized when The Statesman photographer managed to halt proceedings long enough to take this photo of three of the show principals. They included the Chairman of the Show Committee, Doreen Lowery and Society Director Thelma Gilbank, seated at the table, and at rear, Bertha Barnes the guest speaker, holding holding some of her gladioli seedlings. Orley and Inez Mercer celebrated Easter Sunday at Donna and Jim Fajt's home at Pontypool. Steven and Kristy Peacock from near Ottawa spent the weekend with Helen and Jackson Peacock. E. Elizabcth- Villc's meeting is tomorrow. Jim Muldrew spent the weekend with his mother, Mae Muldrew and both were with McIntosh's for Easter dinner on Sunday. Ken and Bertha Trew held their Easter dinner on Monday. Irene Beatty held their family gathering Sunday evening and most of the family were home. Doris and Andrew Gunby were home for the weekend. Peacocks had Alan and Helen Shane and Sophia on Sunday along with Steve and Kristy for dinner. A very pretty wedding was held at Elizabethville Church, on Saturday when Patrick McLean and Maricari- non Doninguez were united in marriage. marriage. The church was. fairly well filled. Reverend Sedgwick officiated and Evelyn Burton played the wedding wedding march. The bridesmaids were Tammy McClean, Ena Lachner and Roseo Rembala. Best man Dan McClean, ushers Marsco Doninguez and Shane Jarvis, Flower girl and ring bearer Nichole Sheppard and Tyler Spicer. After the wedding the party went to the Lions Centre in Port Hope for dinner and dance. The couple are honeymooning in Ottawa. Awareness Day For Mental Health Over 50 local agencies will set up displays relating to their respective programs at die "Mental Health Awareness Day", on Thursday, April 29, 1993 at Five Points Mall, 285 Taunton Road East, Oshawa, from 12 noon - 9 p.m. Some of the agencies setting up displays are; Durham Community Bereavement Services, Denise House, Interact Community Mental Health Program, Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, Oshawa/Durhant Rape Crisis Crisis Centre, Oshawa/Whitby COPE, and more. The event is being presented by the OshawaAVhitby COPE Mental Health Program and the COPE Committee Committee Members. COPE is a program of the Durham Region Community Care Association.
