-v/r Education The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, April 28,1993 9 Vincent Massey Students Complete V.I.P. Program "The Dining Room" at St. Stephen's By Sarah Goggin Our high school years arc probably probably the most significant years of our lives. They will create some of our fondest memories and will be an important important part of shaping us into the persons we will become. Every decision decision we make from grade nine to OAC will affect our future in some way; course selections, mid-terms, university applications, etc., etc., the list goes on for days. With all these kinds of pressures on our back it' is important to have some kind of release, to become involved involved in some extra-curricular activity activity at school that can help take your mind off things for a while. Although we tend to base success on good grades and getting accepted into university university or college, some of the most important skills arc learnt outside the classroom. When I first started at St. Stephen's, almost three years ago, I had just recently moved from Ireland. I .had no .friends here, In that situation, situation, an A in any course would not have made me feel any better. To get to know people I had to become involved involved with the school outside the classroom. When I heard the announcement announcement about the auditions for the school play, I decided to try out. I'd never been involved in a play before before but I thought it would be a good way to meet people. 1 had no idea just how important that decision would be for me. My first part was as the wife of our 199 T production of Blood Wedding Wedding by Federico Garcia Lorca. It was described by our director and drama teacher, Mr. J. M. Sheridan as "a tragic play that deals with people that arc seized by elemental passions' which conflict with custom and reason. reason. In the end, nature wins a tragic victory." The play was extremely successful, undoubtedly one of St. Stephen's finest productions, Anyone who saw the play will remember the stunning performances given by Tracey Tracey Reid and Murray Charland in their leading roles as Leonardo and his mother. The entire cast \vorkcd beautifully together to create a play that we could all be proud of. During those few months we all became very close. We made some lifelong friends and some happy memories; those arc the real rewards of the drama club. As well as this, I learned to cooperate cooperate with a large group of people; to be responsible, tolerant, organized, dedicated, and most importantly, to love, acting. You have to give it - Meg (Sarah Goggin) confesses to her father Jim (Brian Vandcrk- waak) that her "experimental" life style just isn't working, and begs him to allow her to move back home. Being part of a play is not something you should do because you think it will look good on some application. • Every member of the St. Stephen's Stephen's Drama Club, past and present, actor or technician, enjoys what they arc doing and that's what makes our plays so good. Everyone involved with the show is doing their very best; learning invaluable skills and having a lot of fun while they arc doing doing it; that's entertainment! .Regardless, .Regardless, of the size of production, that magic and enthusiasm have always been present. This year I have become involved with our spring production of The Dining Room by A.R. Gurney. It has a cast of 26 people, our biggest ever at St. Stephen's, but as is customary at St. Stephen's we have all come together together with a single purpose in mind and worked together as a family to create what we hope will be one of our finest productions. A lot of time, effort, and talent have gone into this production. This is one play you shouldn't miss. Being part of the Drama Club was definitely one of the best experiences experiences of my life and unfortunately this play will be my last. It allows me to look back on High School and smile despite the failed exams, the detentions, detentions, the break-ups, and the. never- ending homework. Somehow, it seems all worthwhile. I hope that perhaps' perhaps' I have inspired someone to become become involved. If you don't take my word for the excellence of St. Stephen's work in the drama field, come and see The Dining Room. I know that wc can convince you. The play runs from April 29th to May 1. Tickets arc S7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students students and are available by calling 623-7583. Next year, I will be attending the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City and will miss St. Stephen's. I am most grateful grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a special group of people. Being part of the drama club has inspired me to continue my career in the theatre. theatre. It has given me memories, friends and experiences that will stay with me throughout my life. I strongly strongly recommend that if you arc in St. Stephen's or arc planning on going, you check out the drama club; I promise you.it will be worthwhile. So, come check us out on April 29th, 30th, and May 1st. at 7:30 p.m.; ' j it may be the beginning of a wonderful wonderful future for you or your children at St. Stephen's Secondary School I .-'I ■■ i ( ■ Y . 8 ■£WJS mu pSEIjg ms tm £ «SSS85, À T'-?"/ ;■ W- jÊ " ) » i i Im ■Up • T Yj U A Grade Six students at Vincent Massey Public School in Bowmanvillc have recently completed their Values Influences and Peers program which will prepare them for some of the pressures they will face at Senior Public School next year. Pictured with the students are VIP instructors Mrs. C. Roozenboom, Mrs. K. Strong, and Mr. J. Ralfe. Not pictured are instructors H. Stapleton and vice-principal S. Reisch. Grade six students at Vincent Massey Massey Public School in Bowmanvillc have completed a course that will help them resist peer pressure to engage in unsafe or illegal activity. The Values Influences and Peers (VIP) program was sponsored by the Lions Club of Bowmanvillc. It helps prepare kids for the difficult choices they will face as they grow. Matters related to drags, vandalism and shoplifting are central to the VIP course. Constable Mike Marks, of the Durham Durham Regional Police, was one of the leaders guiding the Vincent Massey students through the course. A field trip to a police station in Oshawa was part of the program. Danielle Mosey, one of the students, students, was horrified at the holding cell they viewed. It's a place she never wants to wind up in. Jailed individuals are given no privacy, privacy, she said, even the toilets were exposed. She couldn't see any mattresses mattresses but she did spot a camera. Students also studied the Young Offenders Act and learned it doesn't offer unconditional protection against arrest or prosecution. Students were warned about the possible penalties for juveniles who shoplift, assault other students, vandalize vandalize property, or commit other serious serious offences. None of the students seemed keen on giving up 8 hours a day for several weeks of their summer vacation to mow lawns as part of a court-imposed community service requirement. Vincent Massey students also toured a hospital ward where they were lectured on the life-threatening dangers associated with smoking, alcohol alcohol and illegal drags. They were shown stomach pumps. One student admitted to having his attitude turned around after participating participating in the VIP program. Now he's trying trying hard to keep out of fights with schoolmates and co-operate with oth ers at home and at school. And, he vows to quietly decline if he's ever bullied or pressured into fighting, smoking or committing crimes. "I'll just walk away," he says. "I'll just say No." Staff members J. Ralfe, H. Staple- ton, K. Strong, C. Roozenboom, and S. Reisch led the grade six students through the VIP program. ee< 60 Years Plus in Seed Service Seed Grain, Hay and Pasture Seed Seed Corn and Soybeans Lawn Seed and Agricultural Chemicals We have a wide selection in stock Call Swain Seed 416-986-4331 3 1/2 miles South of Blackstock on Old Scugog Rd.
