V MÊmmêmmêM Ili*ililillll^®i * „ „^tii ■ >v MK A Courtiçe area property owner is concerned about the future of a row of cedar trees along his property property line. During a public meeting at Monday's Monday's Town of Newcastle General Purpose and Administration Committee Committee meeting, Nash Road resident Dan Lawson told councillors he has been looking after the trees for almost almost a decade now. "The trees are not on my property, property, but I've maintained them since August 1983 for Mr. Stark," Mr. Lawson said. Clifford and Ona Stark own the property for which Terry Simkins, of Simkins Homes, has made a re- zoning application to allow five housing lots at the north west corner of Nash and Varcoe Roads. The lots would be on a .47 acre strip of land which now is zoned as agricultural. Mr. Lawson has worked on keep ing the trees healthy because they act as a privacy barrier and help maintain wildlife in the area. But those aren't his only worries. Mr. Lawson told councillors that since the grading of the road has taken place, his property has become become the drainage area for water on the road. "This historically is a poor drainage area," he said. And, since the road construction, the problem has been compounded. Things have become so bad for him that his garage "has begun to sink." Mr. Lawson also pointed out that the lots would be about 54 feet wide. There will be a parking problem problem on the street unless the builder is able to put two-car driveways onto the lots. The rezoning requested by Rick Gay would see the .695 hectare property property located south of Highway Two between Trulls Road and Courtice Road be designated as a "Local Central Central Area." The land currently has a residential zoning. Owners Rick and Harry Gay want to build two additions on either side of an already existing building to create a plaza. The additions would "reflect the architectural style of the house," states a report from the town's Planning Department. Department. During a public meeting on the application, application, Mr. Gay told the members of the General Purpose and Administrative Administrative Committee the house would become "the focal point of the plaza." He said the finished building would be similar to what developers did to create the plaza which houses the M&M Meat shop in Bowmanville. Because of the relatively small size of the plaza, there will be no need for the developer to "provide justification for their development through the submission submission of a retail impact study," says the town's staff report. However, the municipality can request such a study if it believes one is warranted. The Planning Department has a letter letter signed by 13 area residents who oppose the proposed plaza. They said they do not want to see any piecemeal planning for their area. They have suggested that, if the application application is approved, then all the lands between Trulls and Courtice Road south of Highway Two should Continued on Page 11 More than 100 elementary students from Newcastle Public School will be dancing and singing their way through the lively musical "Clowns" next week. The request comes after a short debate debate at Monday's General Purpose and Administration Committee meeting meeting when Mayor Diane Hamrc dis cussed the approval of mileage for councillors. During the discussion, Councillor Mary Novak asked what happens in the case where a resident doesn't want other people to know that a councillor has visited her or his home. Town Treasurer Marie Marano told the group that, currently, the ex pense claims arc not detailed enough. Mayor Hamrc told the group that when the details aren't there and she approves the request, she gets herself into hot water. She complained of being "continually "continually criticized."
