Statistics indicate that as many as 90% of businesses in North America are family-run.These operations can range in size from a single farm to a huge, worldwide chain of retail stores. So too can the founder's reluctance to plan for his or her own inevitable retirement. The Family Business seminars and counselling sessions are designed to get these and other sensitive issues on the table. "One of the biggest problems in family businesses is that people don't talk. There is the assumption of communication, communication, but it is often not there." The survival of the family business should be of national concern, Cum neen says, as there are so many out there and they account for so many job opportunities being created today. 1 The FBDB is also awaiting confirmation confirmation of funding for a possible program program designed to assist mature laid- off workers interested in starting businesses businesses of their own. Many people in their mid 40's who have found themselves suddenly out of a job have set up micro businesses of their own in their homes, he said They never want to be vulnerable again by being an employee and they deserve a chance.
