After a rain-out at Quebec's Sa- nair Super Speedway on April 25, the fast, half-mile Mosport International International Speedway will open the GM Goodwrench Tour's nine-race Canadian Canadian swing on Sunday, May 23. The Sunoco Race Fuels 150, on the oval, will be part of an expansive expansive Victoria Day holiday weekend of racing at Mosport Park. Events for some 10 other divisions will be held that weekend (May 22-24) on the internationally renowned 2.459 mile road course. Two-time GM Goodwrench Tour Champion, Junior Hanley, of Camp- bellville, has dominated the Mosport speedplant in recent years, winning four of the seven races held there. But his sting of consecutive victories victories was broken last August in the GM Motorsport 200. He finished second in that event. Ironically, as in Quebec's Sanair Super Speedway, older drivers have held court in Victory Lane at Mosport. Mosport. The average age of winners at the metro Toronto speedplant is 43.8 years of age. With the abundance of young talent talent on the GM Goodwrench Tour this season, Mosport could see a transition from a track that caters to veterans to one that's been conquered conquered by the'young lions. Among the newbreed of drivers looking to break into Mosport's Winner's Circle for the first time are: Derek Lynch, Kevin Lepage, Dave Whitlock, Brad Leighton, Steve Knowlton, Kip Stockwell, and Danny Knoll Jr., among others. If Norwood, Ontario's, 21-year- old Lynch is .victorious in the May 23 Sunoco Race Fuels 150, he would become the youngest driver by more than 15 years, to win at Mosport. His best outing at the track in the GM Goodwrench Tour's three years of competition there was a fifth in 1992. "Mosport is one of my favorite- tracks," the second generation driver driver stated. "It's close to home, so a lot of people come to watch us there. Obviously I want to do well, but it's also the track where I had the worst wreck of my career," he concluded. While Lepage has posted a lop finish of fourth at Mosport, in 1992 the track was his nemeses. The Shelburne, Shelburne, VT resident was involved in two bad crashes there last year. Both times, they destroyed his Ford. Looking to keep the youngsters in line at the May 23 Sunoco Race Fuels 150 are à host of veteran racers racers including Beaver Dragon, Claude Leclerc, Ralph Nason, Rog : er Laperle, Bill Zardo Sr. and others. others. The Durham. Regional Police Service has once again entered a crew of eight paddlers to compete in the 10th Annual cross-Lake Ontario "Great Lake Race' ' for charity.
