Makes Plans for 100th Anniversary It was a bright and sunny day when Durham West District met at the United Church in Blackstock May 11th, 1993. District President Margaret Ford presided for the meeting. President Margaret gave an outline of her visits in the District. The Area Convention this year is to be held at the Howard Johnson Hotel at Highway 48 and 401. There is to be a table with sale items at the Area this year, with articles articles donated by the branches. The District will host a Rest Area at the Orono Fair in September with each branch participating and donating cookies. The committee will be Mrs. Blaikic Rowscll, Mrs. Louise Bell and Mrs. Bernice Watson. A Scholarship Scholarship Committee is being formed, with the contact person to be Mrs. •Howard Bradley. An Education Committee Committee has been formed with Mrs. Margaret (Philip) Ford, Mrs. Shirley '(Gerald) Brown with one other to be' added. The Fun Fair will be hosted by Ncstlclon in the fall. Provincial Board Director Wendy Flclt brought greetings from the Province. Wendy, in her report, stressed we need to buy Canadian products and if not available ask for them. This will give the merchants a message. Donations to Park House, the future Provincial Office, of twenty-five twenty-five dollars arc eligible to receive a tax exemption. The Erlin Lee is busy this year with several activities taking place. There is to be a travelling travelling exhibit of shoes from 1850 - 1950. A display of dishes, dishes, dishes and more dishes is also planned. An Art Sale, where members members may sell their works, will take place during the month of July. A Victorian Tea - titled "Women Illuminate Illuminate the World" will be August 28th and a Harvest Luncheon September September 28th. (Wendy said we must promote our W.L more. Winking in the dark you know what you arc doing doing but no one else does.) Projects for our One Hundredth Anniversary are progressing, with many branches also having mementos for sale. After a delicious lunch served by the Blackstock W.L ladies, we were entertained by Shcr Lectooze of Courtice who told several stories of early settlers from across Canada. Canada is full of early settler stories, with many to be found close to home. In closing, Sher said we should not turn away from a neighbor who may be odd to us but could have a heart of gold. The In Memoriam for seven deceased deceased members was led by Maple Grove ladies Win Brown and Trixie Vandergaast. Reports were given by the Program Co-ordinator, Curator and the Public Relations Officer. Greetings were brought from R.O.S. by Barbara Weese. The installation of officers was conducted by Wendy Flctt. A vote of thanks by Bowman- ville with the invitation to host the 94th Annual brought the meeting to a close. Bernice Watson District P.R.O. OPTIMISE Woodchippers Bid Farewell to Popular Club President '! ! I Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Durham Regional Police were special guests of the Bowmanvillc Optimists this month during the club's Respect for Law banquet. Inspector Bob Watson, who will be responsible for the new regional RCMP detachment in Bowmanvillc, was one of the guest speakers. He described the duties of the 65 staff members who will work out of the new Bow- manville headquarters building when it is completed in July. Speaker Addresses Presbyterial Meeting The Bowmanvillc Woodchips Club said a fond farewell to one of their past-presidents at the Monday, May 17, meeting. Send-off gifts, like the tidying-up broom he holds here, took Reverend Douglas Hall by surprise. He retires from his professional post at St. George's in Newcastle Village and St. Saviour's Anglican Church in Orono on June 27. Rev. Hall also received a Lifetime Membership to the club. Barb has received a progress report report on Padmo Rumari, the little girl 13 years old who we sponsor through the Christian Children's Fund of Canada. Canada. The women gave Barb the go-ahead. ..The Bowling Banquet we arc to serve at Haydon Community Centre was the next topic of discussion with our Catering Head finalizing the plans and asked for sufficient help. The June meeting will be in charge of Wendy Bourgeous and Barb Walsh. B. Jones Dr. Marjorie Ross, on staff of the International Ministries of the Women's Women's Missionary Society, W.D., of the Presbyterian Church in Canada and Director of Presbyterian World Service Service and Development was guest speaker at the Peterborough Presbyterial Presbyterial meeting held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Norwood, May 12, 1993. She recently visited the Middle East, Korean Christian Church in Japan, Nepal and India and updated us on the work of Canadian Missionaries working in those countries, countries, and thanked our local churches who arc contributing regularly to Presbyterian World Service and Development.
