Education Students Help to Raise Money For "Kids Help Phone" in 1993 During the week of May 10-14, 1993, the students of Bowmanvillc Senior Public School held a fund raiser for the Kids Help Phone Challenge Challenge '93. The Kids Help Phone is a 24-hour bi-lingual, toll-free, confidential counselling service for kids across Canada. At the present time the line answers from 1000 -1200 children a day. The information that the line receives receives from Bell Canada is that in spite of the volume of calls, another 60% are blocked: these children receive receive a busy signal instead of the promised help. The goal of the yearly challenge is to raise $100,000 to help to expand and meet the need for more lines, and to answer the other 2400 calls, that receive a busy signal, $35.00 will buy five minutes of time with one child. The age of the callers ranges from 4 to 19 years of age. The number is a widely known number: 1-800-668-6868. The school's project was a penny drive to raise as many pennies as possible. possible. We succeeded in raising $127.00 to donate to the Kids Help Phone. We would like to thank the following businesses for their prize donations to the school and their support support to help make the fund raiser a success: Vinnic's Pizza, Pizza Pizza, Square Boy Pizza, Pizza Wagon, Mr. Sub, The Bowmanvillc Cinemas (Gentry Theatres), 2 For 1 Subs, Invasion Invasion Hobbies, National Home Video Video and H.O.V. CD's and Cassette's. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the help phone can send their donation donation to: The Kids Help Phone, Box 513, Suite 100, 2 Bloor Street West, Toronto, Ontario M4W 3E2. Donations Donations arc greatly appreciated. The Kids Help Phone Challenge has the endorsement of The Canadian Teachers' Teachers' Federation, The Ontario Teachers' Teachers' Federation and all of its affiliated organizations. Any donations will help the Help Phone's counsellors to help a child like this: An 8 year old boy called Kids Help Phone to talk about a problem he was having at school. As the boy gradually became comfortable talking talking to the counsellor, he dcscloscd that several boys in grade 6 were bullying bullying him. He said he felt "like a chicken" because ho was afraid of them. He tried his best to ignore them, but they would not leave him alone. The counsellor praised the boy for having the courage to call and supported the boy's efforts in trying to deal with the bullies. A large part of the problem was that he felt he had no one to talk to and couldn't make them stop himself. The counsellor stressed that calling Kids Help Phone was a good first step but wondered if it would be better to involve some other people. After some thought, the boy realized realized that the teachers and the principal principal of his school could help. With the counsellor's support, he decided he would talk to his teacher the next morning. By the end of the call, the boy felt better and able to cope with the problem and realized he had the school's support system. Thank you to the school and businesses for their support. "This festival - it's noncompetitive noncompetitive - will be different from our other Board-wide festivals in that everyone will be participating simultaneously" simultaneously" Students arc encouraged to come in "festive costumes" or their school colours, said Ms Walchuk. The festival started with a series of workshops Ms Walchuk and Bob Prole, the physical education and health resource teacher with the Board, performed in schools in the fall and winter. Eight different kinds of dance were presented to teachers and students in grades four to eight. "The festival has created a lot more excitement than we ever dreamed possible," said Ms Walchuk. "Originally, we thought we would get 300 to 400 students." With double that number attending, the original halfday halfday has been extended to two halfdays halfdays and the organizers have had to carefully "map out the park so that each school has its own performance area." Dances to be performed include folk and contemporary and four Cobourg Cobourg high school students, "The Fly Girls," will present a jazz composition they have choreographed at the mid- afternoon intermission. The purpose of the festival is to highlight dance which is now one of the four arts in the curriculum. "We are trying (through the workshops workshops and the festival) to create an enthusiasm enthusiasm for dance and an appreciation appreciation for it as one of the arts as it hasn't yet gained this kind of recognition," said Ms Walchuk.
