The Canadian Statesman 7Uu4e*uUn., Bowmanville, Saturday, June 5,1993 7 Jurassic Park Comes to Bowmanville on June 11th The concept of bringing what was once alive back to life, has been the theme of many authors. Michael Crichton, author of Jurassic Jurassic Park, says this about his book and the movie directed by Steven Spielberg: Spielberg: "When you decide you'll control nature, from that moment on, you're in deep trouble because .you can't do it. "You can make a boat, but you can't make the ocean. You can make an airplane, but you can't make the air. Your powers are much less than your dreams would have you believe." Jurassic Park, the movie, has been in production for over three years, and is touted as "the movie of the year." It is due to open at the Bowmanville Cinemas on Friday, June 11. A publicity package filled with facts, glossy photos and even eight color slides assures movie-goers of an experience they won't soon forget. "Imagine that, you are one of the first visitors to Jurassic Park -- a . melding of scientific discovery and visual imagination," states a press release release from Amblin Entertainment. "You arrive as a child would, free of preconceptions and ready for anything. anything. Your adventure is about to begin. begin. "Entering the gates of the park, your senses are overwhelmed by the world that surrounds you; the sounds, the smells, even the feel of the earth is curiously different. Somewhere in the distance, you hear the movement of huge animals -- the ground shakes with their passing. "You are a stranger in an alien world." Within the park are the creatures that children and adults have thought and dreamed about since finding out about them. The obsession continues, but on a much bigger scale, when billionaire John Hammond, played by Richard Attenborough, conceives the idea of a theme park with dinosaurs recreated from fossilized DNA. "There's a big moral question in this story. DNA cloning may be viable, viable, but is it acceptable? Is it right for man to do this, or did dinosaurs have their shot a million years ago?," Director Director David Spielberg questioned. The theme park takes on a darker quality, a sort of "dark Walt Disney," as the movie progresses past the new beginnings - the births of dinosaurs. "What's interesting to me about this particular project is there is as much science as there is adventure and thrills," said Mr. Spielberg as reported reported in the media package. "Jurassic Park is a cross between a zoo and a theme park. It's about the idea that man has been able to bring dinosaurs back to earth millions and millions of years later, and what happens happens when we come together." It would seem that the dinosaurs roam freely within high-tech fences - - not like the animals at the African Lion Safari near Hamilton. All possible resources available were utilized by Mr. Spielberg and his crews. About .18 months before filming began, an award-winning design team conceived and created the live action dinosaurs to inhabit the park. There is a huge tyrannosaurus rex, a velocirap- tor and four other dinosaurs in the mo- done on the island of Kauai and Red Rock Canyon Slate Park at the west end of the Mojave Desert. The rest of the filming took place inside the Warner Warner Brothers Studios. Bringing Jurassic Park closer to home, there arc two dinosaur skeletons skeletons displayed in the middle of the park's rotunda that were constructed by the Toronto-based company Research Research Casting International. The museum-quality pieces are full-size recreations of a T-rex, which is approximately 40 feet long, and an alamosaurus, which measures 45 feet long. Sam Neill stars as Dr. Alan Grant, a renowned paleontologist who agrees to visit Jurassic Park and then finds out it is home to a number of living species of dinosaurs. Laura Dcrn is Ellie Saltier, a paleo- botanist who is among the first people to lour the park. Jeff Goldbum is Ian Malcolm, a mathematician who predicts disastrous disastrous results for the park. Ariana Richards is Alexis, aka Lex, a precocious 12-year-old who is visiting her grandfather at Jurassic Park. Cast as Tim, a dinosaur lover,, is Joseph Mazzello, whose character is also visiting his grandfather. Bob Peck is Robert Muldoon, the park's serious-minded game warden, while Martin Fcrrero is a skeptical attorney attorney who represents the park's investors. investors. The actor who plays Dr. Wu, the biogeneticist who discovers a proce dure to clone dinosaur DNA, is B.D. Wong. Samuel L. Jackson is Arnold, the chief computer technician, in Jurassic Park's control room. Last, but far from least, is Wayne Knight who portrays Dennis Nedry, a computer genius whose greed and ambition ambition lead to chaos within the park. Directed by Steven Spielberg, who has directed and/or produced six of the lop 20 films of all time, Jurassic Park follows in the footsteps of "Hook," the "Back to the Future" trilogy, trilogy, "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and "The Land Before Time." You can catch "Jurassic Park" at the Bowmanville Cinema starting Fri- >day, June 11. vie. The filming of the exteriors was Tim (Joseph Mazzello) and Lex (Ariana Richards) help Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) feed a friendly Brachiosaurus from their perch high up -in a Jurassic Park tree. The movie, Jurassic Park, opens next Friday, Friday, June 11, at the Bowmanville Cinemas. Shawn Weston was a happy little boy when lie was given a chance to walk the Peace Torch, the symbol of a growing belief in the possibility possibility of true global peace, around the cenotaph in the Town of Newcastle Newcastle square. On May 17, a runner came into Bowmanville bearing this torch which is on its way across Canada.
