Seems a contradiction I know but exams arc no exciting way to end off a year. The excitement comes next as the whole school goes off camping together to Algonquin Park. The only reason that this is possible possible is because we have a rather Power Saver If you live in a single family dwelling (with individual electricity metering) and have lived there for over 8. months you will be receiving in the mail warn YOUR HOME POWER SAVER CHECK-UP Look for it after June 15. WCASTLE YDRO Ontario Hydro small school. Camp-out, as we call it has been a tradition for many years at Durham and the many rituals that come with it as well.' We go from a Wednesday to a Saturday and on our last night we give our final salute to the grade twelvers. They all stand in a long circle circle around the campfire and each student student gives them a hug or a hand shake and a friendly good-bye. Then the Grade twelves have the right to stay up all night by the campfire.to reminisce about their years at Durham. Durham. Jjl But now, I've just got ahead of myself and told about the celebrating and the fun before saying what the students of Durham still have to go through. This week is our week of exams with the last one being written on Friday, June 18. Also on Friday we arc hosting a breakfast of pancakes, pancakes, muffins, juice, coffee, and other other delicious things to the helpful volunteers volunteers who have kept Durham running smoothly all for free! On Monday, June 21, the graduating graduating class of 1993 will be having their ceremony at 8:00 in the school auditorium. auditorium. Everyone from the community community is invited to join them in this celebration. celebration. Due to previous commitments a number of students were unable to attend. attend. written bÿ Lisa Bryn Rundle The last week of school has ended for many B.H.S. students who have met the exemption requirements and have escaped exams. Summer holidays holidays have long been anticipated and all students plan to make the most of them. Whether they arc working or just enjoying the break from school, everybody has fun at the top of their summer priority list. Even while the school year was winding down, activities activities continued. There was lots of work to do to prepare for next year and there are still lots of goodbyes to be said for graduating students. Luckily Luckily the yearbooks have come out so we will never be able to forget this year at B.H.S. Evidence of the new students who will be attending B.H.S. next year could be seen around the school last week. Grade 8 students have been receiving receiving tours of the school. Guided by peer helpers, the new students arc shown the layout of the school, introduced introduced to some classes and they receive receive answers to any questions they may have about B.H.S. The tour includes includes viewing both a B.H.S., student-made student-made video that explores the social social aspects of high school life and a slide presentation put on by the yearbook yearbook class to welcome new students to the school. Entering high school can be an intimidating step and the students involved in conducting the tours and presentations help to make the transition a little easier. Leaving the high school in which you've spent the last four or five years, can be just as intimidating as entering it. For many, departing from B.H.S. also means leaving many friends and moving away, at least for the school year. Although most students students arc anxious to move on to a new stage in their lives, they may also be sad to see this one end. To ease the pain of separating, we can all look forward to Commencement in the fall. Dan Kooy was recently elected valedictorian by his peers to represent the grads of '93 and he looks forward to speaking to the class. In response to his selection, he reports, "I'm still speechless," but we know he'll overcome that by Commencement! Commencement! In addition to the election for valedictorian valedictorian in the last weeks of school, we also held students' council elections. elections. Many new people will be taking taking over the responsibilities of those who arc leaving. Pam Kelly, this year's Prime Minister, says of her term: "Well, it's been a good year but it has had its ups and downs. We had fun during the ups and learned from the downs." Rob Maclver, the new Prime Minister for next year, is looking looking forward to a fun-filled year. The Spring Concert was also held two weeks ago, giving budding musicians, musicians, dancers, politicians and come dians a chance to practise their acts' before an audience of their peers. Thé; audience, as well as those on stage,; seemed to be enjoying themselves. > Last week, the infamous- Screech; Owl was distributed to those students; who purchased them in the fall. The' students in the Yearbook course who produce the book, along with their teacher Ms. Allant, should be very proud of their work. The book is extremely extremely professional looking due to the extensive hard work put in to the making of it. This year's theme was Mosaic and it served to incorporate every member of the school. All in all, it's been a busy year around the school but soon the halls will be empty until September. Just remember, and I think the great philosopher philosopher Socrates said it best, "No more classes, no more books, no; more teachers..." (You know the rest).
