< 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, June 16,1993 „ Brought to you by.. Corner of Courtice Rd. and Sales and Servicing Salesperson of the week ^ Craig Strong j Record Number of Runners in 6th Annual Museum Fund Run by Brad Kelly A couple of marathon runners found the much-shorter 10km distance distance to their liking as they raced to victories in the 6th Annual Museum Fund Run on Sunday morning. Courtice resident and marathon runner Bill Cunliffe covered The Canadian Statesman sponsored course that wound through the streets of Bowmanvillc in a time of 34,59, posting a five second win over Doug Laing, who finished in 35.04 . . . ' On the women's side, Kate Lari- viere, who also competes in marathon marathon races, was the top female, winning winning comfortably by just under eight minutes with a time of 41.21. Jessica Jessica Barrie was second in 49.09. A total of 75 runners registered for the Fund Run, which marked the most in its six year history. Ideal weather conditions and an increasing increasing reputation of being a well- organized event contributed to the high registration numbers this year. Cunliffe, who prefers the longer distance of a marathon over Sunday's Sunday's 10km format, was pleased with not only his first place finish, but also his time. "I set the pace I wanted to run, and maintained it all the way," he said, adding that during a marathon he would cover 10km in 37 minutes. "By the seven kilometre mark, the field started to drop back, but not a lot. They didn't give me too much room." Cunliffe was using the Fund Run as a tune-up for an upcoming marathon marathon in Sudbury. Competing in races races for close to 20 years, he was impressed impressed with the layout of the course. "It was good. I liked it," he commented. "There aren't a lot of big hills.so it was a nice early season season race." Larivierc also had favourable comments on the course, and the organization organization of the event. Entering the race with a limited amount of training so far this year, she wanted to complete the course in under 42 minutes, which she managed to accomplish. The fact she finished first amongst all women women entrants was a bonus. "With a little more training, I could, have finished in under 40 minutes," she said. "But I'm really happy with my time. Especially with this heat." A member of the Whitby Tigers running club, Sunday's event was only the third time in her career that Phone Brad Kelly at 623-3303 fred's autobody ltd. RUPA GETS TITLE SHOT -- The fight that Bowmanville's Nick Rupa, 28, has been waiting for will be taking place in Catskills, New York, on Thursday, June 24. He will be a part of the main event in a 12-round USBA title fight against Kevin Pompei, who has held the title for a couple of years. Nick's mom and dad, Sherry and Ken, will be attending the fight, : with hopes of seeing their son win his first title in professional boxing. OFF TO SEE GRETZKY -- Adam Wilks, 8, of Bowmanvillc, is counting the days until he departs for Quebec City to take part in the Coca-Cola/Waync Gretzky Hockey Camp, which will be held from June 27-29. Adam is one of over 80 lucky youngsters from across North America who had their names selected through a random draw at an earlier clinic. In addition to asking for his autograph, maybe Adam can get some inside information on where Gretzky plans on playing next year, or if he . plans on playing at all? HAAGMANS IS TOPS -- Hampton native Kim Haagmans appears to be doing quite well for herself again this year on the triathlon circuit. After an outstanding season last year which culminated in a top finish at the World Championships, she decided to turn pro for this year. This past weekend in Kitchener, she won a race in a time of 2:11.58. She seems to have picked up where she left off last year. STILL WAITING -- One would have thought that obtaining a press pass • for a Blue Jays game would be relatively easy. Apparently it's not. We are • attempting to secure a pass for Thursday night's game between the Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox so we can interview Port Hope's Paul Quantrill, who is pitching rather well for Boston this year. After faxing a request last Thursday, and following up with a call on Monday morning, we found out that Howard Starkman, Director of Public Relations, won't be in the office ■ until the day of the game. That certainly won't give us much notice. ; Hopefully we will have the interview with Paul, and a number of other j photos, in next week's edition. Stay tuned, this story may take another ; twist yet. FALCONS RETURN HOME -- After a two-week absence, the • Bowmanvillc Falcons of the senior EOBA will return to Soper Creek Park tonight to face Whitby at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday at noon, they will entertain Little Britain. Meanwhile, the Kendal Eagles will also have a home game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they host Cobourg. •eeeeeeeese . AREA TRACK MEET -- Good luck to all of the area athletes who will : be competing at the Oshawa Civic Fields tomorrow in the big senior public • school track and field meet. Athletes from The Pines, M.J. Hobbs, Bowmanvillc Senior, and Dr. Hawkins of Port Hope will be facing each other in the one-day competition. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather. ■V Bill Cunliffe Water stations were a popular spot to grab a cool drink of water in the heat of Sunday morning's 6th Annual 10km Museum Fund Run.
