8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, June 16,1993 By Brad Kelly Two Talented Players Headed Opposite Way The plight of two local baseball players who maintain hopes of one day playing baseball at the professional level, might best be described as similar to that of laboratory mice used in scientific testing. Once surpassing a number of obstacles by choosing the proper path to reach the centre of a maze, mice are rewarded with a piece of cheese. For pitchers Mark Tranter and Jeremy Woodcock, they are hoping to one day reach that elusive piece of cheese. Which, in their case, is having a pro contract placed in front of them requiring only their signature on the dotted line. To reach that level, both arc being forced to take alternate routes through the maze. Tranter, at this point, seems to have the inside track. In the fall he will be enrolling at Howard Junior College in Texas for two years where he will be taking a Physical Therapy course, and playing with the varsity baseball team. He expects to be bn the baseball diamond five days a week, while the team plays an 85-gamc season. Woodcock, on the other hand, has almost resigned himself to .enrolling .enrolling at Durham College in the fall to continue his Law and Security course. He will also be playing for the varsity baseball team. But his season will begin in September and end, should the snow hold off long enough, sometime in October. Last year, one game was cancelled cancelled due to poor visibility during a snowstorm. "I want to play pro ball somewhere," said a frustrated Woodcock, while his team, the Junior Orioles, were in the midst of a game last Thursday. "I know I'm throwing, harder this year, but I'll know better when I get to the Cincinnati camp." The camp of which he speaks is in Belleville on June 24. He attended the same one last year, but had to limit his time there due to exams. While there, he impressed enough that Cincinnati scouts sent him an invitation invitation to attend this year. He tried another route earlier this year, contacting the coach at St. Petersburg Petersburg Junior College in Florida (where Brendan Donahue played for one season, and now finds himself stuck in the maze mentioned above) for an opportunity to show his potential during the march break. Woodcock made the trek, but because of the storm that hit most of the eastern seaboard that week, he didn't even get his glove out of the bag. It all added up to another lost opportunity. He began this summer with the Oshawa junior club, but after six games, he had pitched only three innings. The coach of the team was quoted as saying he envisioned Woodcock being the Duane Ward of the team. The stopper or closer, so to speak, with the chance to collect a lot of saves. That was fine. But wins are rare in Oshawa this year. The only thing Woodcock was closing was the door behind him when he left the dressing dressing room after another game in which he didn't get in any work. "The calibre here isn't the same," he said of returning to Bowman- ville. "But it's a step up because I get to play." Which is what tranter is hoping to get, a chance to play, when he departs departs his Orono home on August 9 for Texas. He was noticed by scouts back in 1991 at a baseball camp hosted by Western Michigan University. When Howard Junior College called looking looking for a solid left-hander they could add to their staff, a scout representing representing Penn State suggested Tranter. The rest, they, say, is history. Tranter, however, prefers to call it a dream. "It's been my lifelong dream to go to the States and play," he said, after pitching against Bowmanvillc last Thursday. "Not many kids get this kind of opportunity." After interest was shown by the Texas school, Tranter moved up in calibre last year to play for the same Oshawa junior team that Woodcock was. A lack of playing time brought him back to Bowmanvillc. This year, he is suiting up for the Ajax juveniles, and appears to be as sharp on the mound as ever, collecting two wins. One of those against Bowmanvillc last Thursday. So as one begins to weave his way through the baseball maze, the other other stands at the entrance, waiting for an invitation to enter. y SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Nurse Chevrolet Oldsmobile would like to welcome Bill Waller to their New Car Sales Team, Bill has a wealth of knowledge and automobile experience and has been employed in the automobile service community for over 20 years. As the game progressed, it wasn't a case of whether Ajax would win, but rather, by how many. They scored seven times in their first at bat, and their pitching staff limited the Orioles to a measly three hits, as Ajax rolled up the score in an easy 154 win. "We have only had one close game this year," said Ajax starting pitcher, and Orono resident, Mark Tranter. "Everyone wants to play ball on this team, and that's the bottom line. Our goal is to get to the OBA finals, and it is therefor us." Nine hits and seven walks allowed allowed by the Orioles pitching staff, and a total of seven errors committed committed by the defence were the main contributors to the lopsided score. . It added up to just another typical evening at the ballpark for die Orioles, Orioles, said coach Don MacArthur. "We've been struggling a little," he said afterward. "We're a little further back than I thought we would be. "I didn't know if we would have enough players to field a team this year, so I told everyone if they came out they would get to play. There are two or three guys on this team who haven't played before.' ' MacArthur utilized all of his players in Thursday's encounter in preparation for a tournament they competed in this past weekend. Ajax scored early, giving Tranter a 7-0 lead to work with before he even took to the mound in the bottom bottom of the first inning.
