Complox Go-kart Racer Third at Nationals by Brad Kelly Consider it three times lucky for go-kart racer Scot MacKenzie. In two previous appearances at the Canadian Grand Nationals, his best finish was a ninth. This year, making his third successive successive trip to compete against the elite racers in his sport, MacKenzie placed third out of 51 racers in the Senior Light Class. "I hoped to get into the top 10," said the 16-year-old of his expectations expectations prior to the race. But, when the rain began to fall at Shannonville Motorsport Park, MacKenzie knew that his chances of finishing higher would improve. He seems to excel under those conditions, conditions, he said. "If you're under-powered, the rain will even you out with the other racers," he said.'"The rain equals everyone out, to a point." The Grand Nationals represent the biggest event of the year for go- kart racers in Canada. Drivers from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, the Maritimes, Quebec and the United United States make the trek each year to compete against the best drivers in the sport. In his first appearance at the Grand Nationals in '91, MacKenzie finished in the middle of the pack. Last year, he was ninth in the Junior Heavy Class. He has come a long way in the sport after beginning his short career in 1989 at the go-kart track in Whitby. Whitby. One year later, he was racing as a member of the Durham Kart Club. Last year, he was the Durham Kart Club Jr. 4-Cycle Champion. This year, he moved to the Sim- coe Kart Club, competing in a 10 race series that runs from April to October. The circuit makes regular stops at tracks in Shannonville, Sutton, Sutton, Peterborough and Gamcbridgc. After six races, the grade 12 student student at Bowmanville High School has accumulated enough points to place himself in the top ten. His highest finish thus far has been a second, in tire rain, at Sutton. "I'd like to end up first, but realistically, realistically, the top five would be nice," MacKenzie said. "I just go out every weekend to practice and do the best I can." He hopes to one day parlay his racing interests into a career on the Indy Car circuit, alongside the likes of two prominent Canadians, Paul Tracy and Scott Goodyear. "If I was 50 years old and got the chance, I would lake it," he said of his aspirations. "Hopefully, it will come a lot sooner than that." But, before he can get behind the wheel of an Indy car, there is a progressive progressive ladder he must first climb. Getting into the Formula 1600 or 2000 scries would be the next logical logical step in his progression. From there, a number of different factors come into play. Namely, these factors include winning races and getting some lucky breaks. "You have to prove yourself to the car owners, and it takes a little luck. You have to be in the right place at the right time," MacKenzie said. For the time being, the right place at the right time for Scot MacKenzie is atop the winner's podium podium following each race. Go-kart racer Scot MacKenzie had his best finish in three attempts at the Canadian Grand National Championships held at Shannonville Motorsport Park recently. In two previous years, his best placing was ninth, but this year he managed to finish an impressive third overall in the Senior Light Class. He hopes to be behind the wheel of an Indy car some day. Point Chase Continues at Mosport by Nelson Hudes With only three Saturday nights of action left at Mosport International Speedway, the season is drawing to a close awfully fast. But the points chase is hot and heavy as we get down to the wire and the end of another season. season. Saturday, August 21, proved to be no different than any other night of racing at the speedway. The sun was shining, the air was crisp, the drivers ii ready and raring to go, and the fans primed for the weekly spectacular stock car action. This was the second week in a row that the fans were treated to extra heats in the Thundcrcar division as the car counts were huge this night. Two extra heats were slotted and put on the schedule. 1 The two double winners of the night were Doug Todgham of Oshawa and Roycc Jones of Frascrville. Ken Perrier of Oshawa took a heat as did Scott Harrison of Scarborough. In the feature event, there was lots of passing, mad dashes, spins, and good, hard-fought, all-out racing. In the end, there could only be one winner winner and, as some might have predicted, predicted, one of the favourites of the speedway speedway grabbed that honour. Roycc Jones once again triumphed, grabbing the checkered flag and the celebrated victory lap. In second was Todgham, and in third was Harrison. In Street Stock division, Brent Sullivan Sullivan of Whitby was also a double winner in the early evening heats. Graham Brown of Willowdalc also snagged one as did Joe Malcilc of Hampton. In the feature event, with quite a bit of dicing going on deep in the pack, the action was just as interesting and exciting as it was at the front of the field. Passing was the name of the game and everybody seemed to know what they were up against. At the end of the race, Duke Paul of Oshawa was victorious, followed by Graham Brown and in third was Brent Sullivan. In Late Model division, there were four different winners in the early evening evening heats, making for some exciting racing. Stan King of Campbellcroft grabbed number one, while Dave Taylor Taylor of Port Perry was the second winner. winner. Bart Adams of Oro Station was winner number three, and Rod Sauder of Port Perry won the fourth ancl final heat. fl'JX) In the feature event, there was lots of good action in the field. This was. one of the best races of the season as all the drivers tried to muster every ounce of strategy they could find to grab the points they need for the end of the year. In the end, Vic Auger of Trenton was the man of the hour as he was victorious. victorious. In second was Gary Mead of Orillia and in third was Rod Sauder of Port Perry. Be sure not to miss the last weekend weekend of the season on September 11- 12, when Mosport International Speedway will feature the GM Good- wrench Tour at the track. Also on the weekend is the Goodyear Goodyear Challenge Cup, featuring the stars of some of Ontario's short tracks, and the regular Street Stock, Late Model, and Thundcrcar division.
