It starts Thursday, September 9, and concludes September 12. Events will include parades, livestock shows, band concerts, harness racing, school talent exhibitions, a demolition derby, midway, commercial exhibitions, exhibitions, and much more. See you at the fair! • ••••Maim RODEO KICK-OFF - Want to experience the thrill of the world's most dangerous sport and also help the United Way? Then come to the rodeo kickoff event at the Flying Dutchman Hotel in Bowmanville Friday, September September 10 and Saturday, September 11. Chris Mendes, owner of The Lighthouse Lighthouse Sports Bar, will be testing his skill on the mechanical bull and has been accepting pledges for the number of seconds he can stay on. There will also be a "Bull Riding Competition" with prizes and give-aways. The event will also feature a dance with "Chaser" and all proceeds are to go to the United Way. The kick-off on September 10 and 11 is in preparation for the Ontario Finals Rodeo being held October 1, 2 and 3 on Down Rd., near Courtice. The rodeo is sponsored by the Kinsmen Clubs of Bowmanville and The Great Pine Ridge. REGISTRATION AT CENTRE FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDIES - Adult students can upgrade their skills or complete a high school diploma this fall, through the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education's Centre for Individual Studies. Registration takes place September 7,8,9 and 10 for classes beginning on September 13. A total of 16 classes are available. KITE FESTIVAL - In Celebration of Big Brothers Month this September, the Big Brothers of Newcastle are holding a Kite Festival at Courtice Secondary School Saturday, September 11. It runs from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Children are invited to bring their own homemade kites. There will be 20 kite kits for sale for those who do not have a kite. In addition to various kite contests, there will be entertainment, face-painting, and refreshments. . CLOTHING GIVE-AWAY - The Seventh Day Adventist Church at Lamb's Rd. and Highway Two, east of Bowmanville, is holding its clothing give-away next week. There is a great quantity of good, almost-new clothes available to all ages. If you need free clothes, visit the church on September 6,7, and 8 between nine a.m. and four p.m. each day. PIONEER CRAFT DAY AT LANG VILLAGE - Over 40 pioneer crafts, plus a large clock and watch display and a Victorian Punch and Judy Show will be featured on Sunday, September 5, at the Lang Pioneer Village. Pottery, tinsmithing, milling, furniture-making and blacksmithing will be among the crafts represented. Freshly-picked com will also be served. S wi fl e CIU b Blackstock Resident Wins $50,000 Ends With Farm Tour By Jason Crosier The members of the swine club met at Abe Stouffer's farm in Wood- ville for their final meeting. We looked at purebred York, purebred Landrace, and crossbred hogs, and compared the breeds. We were also shown what to look for in good breeding stock, and which stock should be culled. Each member was given a short quiz to answer and refreshments refreshments were served at the end of the meeting. Our thanks go to Abe Stoufler for hosting this very informative informative meeting. PORT DARLINGTON YARD SALE -- On Saturday, September 11, the Port Darlington Community Association will hold its annual yard sale. It will take place between nine a.m. and three p.m. at the intersection of Port Darlington and West Beach Roads. In the event of rain, the sale will be September September 12 at the same location. Donations are welcome. Contact any of the officers or directors of the Port Darlington Community Association for further further details. The penning and showring looked great thanks to the efforts of many 4-H members and their families and friends who helped to paint, transport, and set up the penning penning which was donated to the club by Herman Van Kessel, and welded into a uniform size by Eric O'Brien of Erics Mobile Welding. The first class to be judged was senior showmanship showmanship with Andrew Frew placing first, Scott Swain second, David Kemp third, and Jeff Kemp fourth. In the junior, showmanship class, Anson" Crosier placed first, Luke Camaghan second, Todd Moore third, Jason Crosier fourth, and Stephen Found fifth. Congratulations to Andrew Frew for being the champion showman showman and to Scott Swain who was the reserve champion. The final class was for conformation conformation of the barrow, in which the pigs were judged for body type and back- fat measurement. At 3 p.m. the pigs were sold by auction in other of their placings in the conformation class. The grand champion hog, owned by Jason Crosier, was sold to Utica Farm Equipment, reserve champion" hog, owned by Anson Crosier Crosier was purchased by Scugog Moving Moving and Storage, Scott Swain's hog was sold to Master Feeds in Cavan, Dave Kemp's hog was purchased by Pineridge Packers, Andrew Frew's hog was sold to Kawartha Consumers Co-op in Lindsay. Jeff Kemp's hog was purchased by Harvey Graham, Todd Moore's hog was sold to Black- water Dressed Meats and Poultry Processing Plant, Stephen Found's hog was purchased by W.D. Thompson Thompson Elevators, and Luke Camaghan's hog was sold to Wrights Feeds in Blackstock. We would like to thank all the purchasers for making the swine auction auction a success, auctioneer Amott Wotton, judge and auction ring assistant assistant Terry Malcolm, and to Keith Van Camp for transporting the pigs after the sale. "It comes in handy," John Baumchen told Ontario Lottery Corporation Corporation staff after winning $50,000 recently, playing the Instant game, Top Dollar. The 50-year-old Blackstock resident is a farmer. The most he had ever won before was $1,000. He and his wife, Nellie, plan to pay bills with the windfall.
