I ■ 14 The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, September 18,1993 United Way Benefits from Fundraiser Chris Mendes took a ride on the wild side last weekend, when he climbed aboard a mechanical bull that was located in the main lobby of The Flying Dutchman Hotel. The September 10-11 fund-raiser was in support of the United Way, and was sponsored, in part, by the Kinsmen Club. The weekend also served as a promotion for the upcoming upcoming Ontario Rodeo Association 1993 finals, which are being held in Courtice on October 1-3. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Temperance and Church St. Bowmanville 623-3432 SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19th, 1993 11:00 a.m. Worhsip Service Sunday School begins this Sunday Come and celebrate. Minister: Rev. Harvey Osborne, B.A., M.Div. 623-0009 1993 has been dedicated as The European Year of Older people and Solidarity between Generations. What better way to salute the year than by going back to 55 BC, and Cicero, Cicero, who wrote one of the most spirited spirited and lengthy defences of Old Age ever recorded? It went like this: "Those, therefore, who allege that old age is devoid of useful activity, are like those who would say that the pilot does nothing in the sailing of the ship, because while others are climbing masts, running about gangways, gangways, or working at the pumps, he sits quietly in the stem and simply holds the tiller. He may not be doing what younger younger members of the crew are doing, but what he does is better and much more important. It is not by muscle, speed or physical dexterity that great things are achieved, but by reflection, force or character and judgement: in these qualities old age is usually not poorer, but often even richer." "On Reaching age 87" Having reached the age of eighty-seven (And hopefully still far from heaven!) Of getting old, I do regret But it's no use to sit and fret. My legs won't go and that's a blow, But the parts above are full of go. There must be more in this life still Apart from paying all those bills! The friends we make, in our life through They bring to us a little hue, It's such a great big world out there For that I haven't got a flair! Don't leave till tomorrow what you can do today It should have been done yesterday, anyway! The things of the past still rate high After the clouds, there is a blue sky. So, its press on for a while, Try and climb all those stiles, Count your blessings one by one, Be thankful for so far you've come. Next week 1 am going to write about memories. Also, I pi omise I will finish up with the Bill of Rights for People who live in Ontario Nursing Nursing Homes if there's room. If not, then it will have to be the following week. If you keep being friendly you will surely be befriended. Till next week.
