Grade 12 students from St. Stephen's Catholic High School boarded a bus bright and early last Thursday Thursday morning and set off for a four-day camping trip in Algonquin Park. The 23 teens relumed on Monday. Monday. St. Stephen's has been organizing annual camping trips for its senior students for the past five years. (C) Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville is adding two skilled professionals to its medical staff in an ongoing campaign campaign to offer expanded services to the community. Dr. Padamjit Singh, M.D., F.R.C.S (C), is an obstetrician and gynecologist who comes to the hospital with an impressive background background that includes research and lecture lecture work. Originally a graduate from the Armed Forces Medical College in India, Dr. Singh recently completed her residency fellowship at Grace General Hospital in St. John's, Newfoundland. Newfoundland. She has worked independently independently throughout India and the Middle Middle East and is the author of 12 papers which have been published in medical journals and, in one case, a medical textbook. Her latest accomplishments accomplishments include an award for best junior paper, presented in recognition of a study conducted on the effects of administering oxytocin (a dntg used to induce labour). As well as delivering babies and performing standard procedures, Dr. Singh deals with any abnormal obstetric obstetric cases that the hospital is equipped to handle. Dr. Pcdroili received his medical education at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. "Student Council is planning on making this year one to remember. We have a lot of new ideas that we hope will spark interest," says new Prime Minister Christine Downey, who is determined to make this year a success. Rumor has it that Student Council has lots in store for us, beginning beginning with grade nine welcome day and the first school dance, to be held Thursday, September 23. Despite the many changes that have been made at St. Stephen's, vice-principal Sharan Rush-Jcancs répons répons that all has gone smoothly. Our busy schedule has resumed once again, and our agenda books are full of activities and events going on in the coming months. On Thursday September 16, the grade 12s began the cvcr-popular 4- day canoe trip at Algonquin Park. As in the past, the trip was declared an enormous success. Many thanks go to Father Bill for providing the opportunity opportunity to become one with nature, and exhaustion. The following day, Friday September September 17, approximately 50 people from all grades boarded a bus to attend attend the Stratford Festival where they saw the play "Being Ernest and Gypsy." Right now cross-country, girls basketball and boys soccer teams arc preparing for their forthcoming seasons. seasons. Girls' basketball coach Andy Austin was pleased at the large turnout, turnout, and is looking forward to a great basketball year. Soccer coaches Dave Quigley, Kilcy MacDaniel and Joe Bitonti arc all optimistic about a strong season and our cross country crew has been described as "small but dedicated." All in all, from both students' and staff's perspective things arc looking great at St. Stephen's for the coming year. Briunna McGuire P.A. Day Emphasizes Classroom Discipline On Friday, September 24, 1993, the PVNN Roman Catholic Separate School Board is hosting a Professions - al Activity Day on Positive Class-' room Discipline, featuring guest presenter presenter Dr. Fred Jones. Dr. Jones is author of a comprehensive comprehensive classroom management system system consisting of Positive Classroom Discipline and Positive Classroom Instruction. Thousands of teachers and school administrators in North America have been exposed to the concepts of Dr. Jones and are now using his concepts concepts in tlie classroom. Dr. Jones promotes discipline as a growth process leading to self- control, co-operation and positive self-worth. He states that "students should be led to develop basic values and to accept the responsibility of their actions." The Maple Grove UCW met on September 16 at 8:00 p.m. in the CE Hall. Previous minutes and reports were given. We will be ordering 20 1994 Church calendars to sell again this year. Plans are being made to hold a Meat and Potato Pie supper on November 20. To open the worship service, we were treated to a recorded tape of the Tri-City Slickers Men's Quartet as they sang a beautiful arrangement of "How Great Thou Art." Then Marg Down read a poem called "A Glimpse of Heaven." The theme of the worship service was Prayer - it is not a duty, but a privilege. Scripture was read from Matthew 6: verses 1 - 13. Marg Down and Kathy Makxam read a dialogue called "If God Should Speak" between a lady who is praying The Lord's Prayer and the Lord Himself who unexpectedly answers answers her. After, we sang the hymn "Sweet Hour of Prayer," Kathy welcomed welcomed Reverend David Jones to our meeting for some Bible Study.
