The U.C.W. met in the Sunday School room on Wednesday the 15th. We were invited to a delicious lunch of muffins and tea-biscuits with coffee coffee before starting the meeting. President Lois Nimigon greeted everyone and welcomed our visitors. The committee of Ruth McGill, Alma Rowan and Clara Page took charge of the programme emphasizing emphasizing the need for Light. Ruth read "Let there be Light" and Alma read "The Power of Light". Verses from John - Peter and the Psalms were used to illustrate how people who live in the darkness, without spiritual help, are easy prey for those who would lead them in evil ways. How helpless we are without the power of Light. When we are without Hydro for a few hours we are helpless to do many things. We take so much for granted. And when it's taken away many of us couldn't even get a drink of water. So it is without a spiritual leader we go astray. Alma introduced our guest speaker speaker Mrs. Dr. Rowscll. She showed some pictures and told us of their recent recent medical trip to Guyana. A team of nine people visited a small hospital hospital in Guyana to bring medical help to many of the local people there. Working conditions and equipment to work with are pretty primitive but with the help of the Lions Club there, they are supplied with a residence and some help. This team of medical people all pay their own way and give of their time for two weeks twice a year, for many of these people people it's the only treatment they get. Dr. and Mrs. Rowscll, along with several volunteers, arc going again to Guyana in November. We all enjoyed Blaikic's pictures and her address, making us all aware of our good fortune in being Canadian Canadian Citizens. A small gift was given in appreciation and will go to help buy supplies for their trip. Our business and minutes were dealt with. Several cards were sent to our friends who arc ill with get well soon messages. Tickets for the "Torchman's concert arc printed now and arc on sale for October 17th. Lois closed the meeting with prayer. Resident Seen on Morning Television Show Happenings in Yelverton Area ' Malcolm We were pleased to see a former Manvers Twsp. resident as a guest this a.m. (Friday, September 10) on Canada "A.M." in the person of Mr. Douglas Hamilton. Doug is the coowner coowner of the "Kettle Creek" clothing enterprise which has an outlet in Lindsay operated by Doug's sister. He was being interviewed for his comments on the economy specifically specifically for a business that continues to thrive despite Free Trade and the G.S.T. He is a son of Mrs. Barbara Hamilton of Lindsay and a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Preston, also of Lindsay. Doug made a very good impression with his fluent commen- taty. Well done! A number of local residents attended attended the 80lh birthday observation of Mr. Bert Visee of Mount Pleasant Cavan in Cavan United Church basement basement on Saturday p.m. September 11 from 2 to 4. Bert is well known in our community having married a Yelverton Yelverton girl, the former Edna Robinson Robinson way back on September 12, 1955. Bert has remained remarkably youthful despite having acquired octogenarian octogenarian status. It is always a pleasant pleasant experience to renew old friendships friendships with folks we haven't seen for years. Belated congratulations to Preston and Aileen Preston of Lindsay - former former Manversites who recently quietly quietly observed their 45th wedding anniversary anniversary with close friends and family. On Friday evening it was our pleasure to have our annual get- together with friends we met some 10 years ago while vacationing in Hawaii. Hawaii. We refer to Evelyn and George Nakkala of Surprise Lake near Thunder Thunder Bay. They were spending a few days with their daughter Lori who is a Registered Nurse in Wellesley Hospital Hospital in Toronto. We had a very pleasant social evening with the Nak- kalas family which included a fine dinner at the Olive Gardens. Ralph and Linda Pfoh spent this past weekend in the locale of the Madonna Madonna House where they renewed friendships with many acquaintances. Don't forget Yelverton United Church's Anniversary - the 131st, we believe, Since the unfortunate fire that consumed St. Mary's Anglican Church this past year, Yelverton now has the distinction of being the oldest church in Manvers Twsp., with the original structure still in use. Miss Valerie Malcolm has flown home from Australia to be with her Dad - Murray Malcolm who is seriously seriously ill. Reverend Ross Benns based his Sunday sermon on "Wisdom and Jus tice" a worthy combination of virtues for those lucky enough to possess same. He also provided an interesting dissertation on the life history of the Monarch butterfly. The Monarch butterfly butterfly is the only butterfly that is known to migrate each year to as far away as Mexico. Too bad there weren't weren't more folks present to hear from. A number of local residents attended attended some of the functions at Oro-. no fair this year. Howard Malcolm entered his early edition Coop tractor in the Antique tractor class. Sterling McGill also entered his antique Garden Garden tractor in the antique competition. competition. Over 60 tractors were on display in the various classes. The Saturday evening dance with. Bill Taylor's tradesman was well attended attended to hear excellent dancing music. music. Tyrone U.C.W. Jackie V. has her name down for planning this event and needs help. February 19th has been the date set up for a chicken Pol Pic Supper - sounds good. Offering was received and dedicated. dedicated. Then Jean Slcmon and Blanche J. took the Devotional period, Blanche opened with a poem entitled, "Don't Quit" then hymn 399 was sung "Faith of Our Fathers", Devotional scripture was from Philippians 4-6, 7. "Have Faith in God" was read. Hymn 507 "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" was sung. Blanche read "Have you earned Tomorrow?" A take off on "Hiring a new minister." Jean had an interesting reading of the Monarch Butterfly - what they eat, the time from the egg to when it reaches the wing stage and how to observe them, their migrating habits to Mexico. Many details that none of us had even imagined. This part was closed by prayer, then Jean had a contest of numbers, quite different. A social time was spent over lunch.
