Absent was Adam Stevenson. by Brad Kelly Noted outdoorsman Ron Farrow, of Newtonville, admits to driving everyone around him just a little bit crazy lately. He has been exercising his vocal chords at great length for the recently-completed recently-completed World Master Moose Calling Championships. Despite the annoyance to those around him, his preparations proved most beneficial. Farrow beat eight other competitors competitors to be recognized as the best moose caller in the world. "I've been practising everywhere. everywhere. Driving in my truck, at home, at work. Basically I've been driving everyone crazy," he said. The World Masters Competition brought together all of the previous world champions from the past 11 years to the Toronto International Centre on September 10. It's not the first time that Farrow has been in die limelight because of this particular hobby. He gained national notoriety when he won a world championship back in 1983. Shortly after winning the title, he appeared in a promotional promotional television commercial for Lotto 649. 4 Competitors at this year's World •Masters event were required to 'make two separate calls, and were awarded points by five different judges. The high and low scores were thrown out, and the remaining three were combined to produce a score. In their criteria, judges arc looking looking for the caller who can get the closest to emulating die natural sound of a moose. The first of die two calls competitors competitors perform is a cow call, which brings a bull to the caller. The second second is a call that will challenge a bull. Farrow has been able to perfect the two calls from spending countless countless hours in the woods. There arc also instructional cassettes available that have been on the market for close to 20 years. "This is serious business to moose callers," said Farrow. For his winning effort, Farrow was presented with a moose wood carving, a four-way hunting system, and a jacket. The wood carving he received as World Champion in 1983 was recendy appraised at $2,700. But it isn't die prizes dial attract the competitors to diese particular events, says Farrow. To those involved, involved, it's the prestige of competing competing and winning that makes all of the preparations worthwhile. "What you make on a championship championship afterwards is up to you," he said. Farrow does stand to make some money on his recent championship. A fiberglass horn that he manu factured arid was used to win three championships in various divisions in Toronto, including his own, is a hot commodity amongst callers. He already has orders for 15 of the horns. Should his success continue on the moose calling circuit, Farrow may find himself having to go outside outside the country to compete. His three provincial titles in 1983, '86 and '90 were the maximum maximum he could win, and he is now banned from the competition. He is still eligible to win two more World Championships, and will go in search of his second such title next year in Toronto. The World Masters are only held every three years, giving him at least six more years to continue perfecting perfecting his hobby.
