For most cottage owners, this is an onerous chore - not just because of the amount of physical work involved involved - but because it hails the end of a season traditionally filled with memories of moonlit canoe rides, hikes through the woods, sailing and swimming in the sun - and just plain fun. But, as the daylight hours begin to wane and the air develops a chilly nip, you realize you can't procrastinate procrastinate any longer: autumn has officially officially arrived and winter will follow shortly. Organize Well in Advance If you organize yourself well enough in advance and get everyone in your family involved in the undertaking, undertaking, you'll find the job goes much faster and is far less depressing. A proper cap should help keep any curious animals from setting up a cozy retreat in your cottage during the winter months. These caps can usually be purchased inexpensively at local building centres or hardware stores. High and Dry When removing boats from the water, make sure they're well- drained before storing them. If you have a sailboat, it's important to make sure the sail is dry before storing storing it; otherwise, you could end up with mould and mildew next spring. The same common-sense approach approach applies to outdoor furniture - make sure everything is clean and dry before storing. (Keep in mind that it will probably be easier to clean off any grime now as opposed to next spring). Indoors Indoors, cottage closing duties usually involve lighter tasks - and this is an area where your youngsters can be a big help. While it's important to remove all perishable items, it's also advisable to pack up any tinned goods, because they can freeze and split over the course of the winter. (If you've ever accidentally left a carbonated beverage beverage tin in the freezer in an attempt to cool it, you know what kind of mess this can make.) You may opt to leave a few staples staples behind in air-tight storage containers, containers, but again - make sure they arc well-secured against any mice that might mosey in during the fall.
