' RUPA TO FIGHT IN OCTOBER -- A report published in the Toronto Sun newspaper last week said that Nick Rupa will step back into the ring on October 12. His opponent with be welterweight Rodney Moore, who has a professional record of 33-8-2 with 16 KOs. The fight will be for the USB A title. Nick has a record of 20-2-1 with eight KOs. by Brad Kelly Twelve months ago, she made history as one of the first female goalies to play a full season in the Ontario Hockey Association. One year later, Sarah Couch finds herself in a desperate fight to retain her job as one of two goalies for the Jr. C Bowmanvillc Goodyear Eagles. One of the two positions has been handed to veteran Drew Campbell, Campbell, who will serve as one of the team's over-aged players. What remains is a battle between Couch, Jason Bailey, Steve Okc and Chris McCarthy for the coveted second second spot. It's a scenario that most organizations organizations would dearly welcome. But the situation is causing all sorts of headaches for the Eagles brain-trust as they draw closer to naming their opening day roster. "It's tough to pick right now," said coach Mark Watson, who sidestepped sidestepped detailing any specifics regarding regarding the goalies. "We're taking an extra long look at them." There are a couple of opportunities opportunities remaining to see the four candidates candidates vying for the position. A homc-and-home series with Port Perry is to take place before the Eagles Eagles open the season on Friday, October October 8, in Uxbridge. Ideally, the Eagles would like to select a goaltender who will stay with die club next year and inherit the number one position. As training camp began, Couch appeared to be the logical choice. She earned her spot with the team last year after enjoying a splendid training camp, and was signed as a back-up to Campbell. The two shared in winning the Smith Family Trophy, awarded to the team with the best goals against average in the league. But the competition in goal this year is much-improved over the situation situation dial existed a year ago. Coucli realizes dial she's in a battle to regain her spot. "I want to play with the team TONBA MEETING -- Don't forget that the Town of Newcastle Baseball Association will be holding their Annual General Meeting tonight at the Bowmanville courthouse. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. HUGE SALMON CAUGHT -- Derek Henderson stopped into our office last Thursday morning with a huge grin on his face after pulling two giant salmon out of the creek by the Goodyear Dam. The 17-year-old Courtice resident was using a worm when he landed a 20 pound and an 8 1/2 pound salmon. We took a çouple of pictures, but they didn't do the size of the fish any justice, so we thought it would be best to mention it here. Teams Names Announced For Youth Bowling League and prove myself," she said following following Sunday night's exhibition game against Picton. "I proved myself last year, but this year, it's every goalie for themselves. themselves. I figure if I play well and don't give them any reason to cut me, then they won't." On Sunday night at the Recreation Recreation Complex, Couch played the second half of an easy 7-3 win over Picton. She surrendered all three goals after replacing Bailey, who faced very few shots. One of Picton's goals came on the power play while another was a short-handed tally. Doug Parkin and Ryan Becker had a pair of goals each for the Eagles. Eagles. Kirby Moore, Paul Gagnon and Craig Hilton had one apiece. Becker, who continues to impress impress during training camp, helps comprise the strongest starting position position for the Eagles. Veterans Dave Stockton and Brad Robinson, along with rookie Sean Brown, give the Eagles four very solid centremen. Unfortunately, their next four strongest positions are in net, where only two will make the team. And whomever that second goalie goalie is, they won't find themselves labelled labelled as a back-up. Coach Watson vowed that both goalies will see plenty of ice time. "(Drew) Campbell is just the First goalie we signed. He has to earn his ice. time," said Watson. "I won't sign two goalies and then have one of them sit on the bench all the time." It's expected that the roster will be finalized following Sunday's home game with Port Perry.
