Green Party's Candidate Contests Durham Riding The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, October 6,1993 3 Citizens of All Ages Enjoy New Glenabbey Parkette in Courtice by Laura J. Richards A vote for Durham riding's Green Party carididate will show the next federal government you care about the environment. That is what Newtonvillc resident Judy Hurvid wants each voter to think about when they are standing in the voting booth on Monday, Oct. 25. Hurvid is the latest of eight candidates candidates vying for your vote in the federal federal election. Judy Hurvid She is a life-long resident of Durham Durham and the mother of three. With her husband, she organically faims 41 acres just east of Newtonvillc. Hurvid is a graduate of McMaster University and a former full-time teacher. She is currently employed with the Northumberland and Newcastle Newcastle Board of Education as a supply teacher. She is a member of the Port- Granby Environment Committee and in 1991 she, along with a partner won the Recycling Council of Ontario award for best Waste Reduction Week in Ontario. The Green Party has an extensive platform on the issues that concern everyone, she said last week. "The Green Party is not a one- issue party," she told The Statesman. "None of the established parties considers the environment as a major issue or considers environmental factors factors when making a decision," Hurvid said. One of the areas in which the Green Party wants to see some action is in sustainable development. The Green Party would rather see money pulled from non-renewable resource resource industries and put towards sustainable sustainable industries. "There is no reason for the government government to spend three billion dollars on Hibernia when, in 20 years, the oil will be gone and so will the jobs," she remarked. Instead of spending so much money money on that, the government could be looking at renewable sources such as solar energy, geo-thermal energy, wind-generated energy and wood, Hurvid said. Looking at the deficit, the Green Party would see to it that subsidies for road construction are cut while encouraging encouraging the raising of taxes on non- rcncwable resources. The Green Party is also encouraging encouraging the support of industry in Canada that adds value to the products leaving rather than Canadians buying back value-added products made with Canadian Canadian raw materials. It's always a happy occasion when we open one of our parks," the mayor said in her address to a group of parents, pre-schoolers and dignitaries dignitaries bundled up against a chilly wind for the ceremonies. Although the grand opening was held off until this fall, when details of the landscaping and construction could be finished, the park has still seen plenty of use over the summer. Local resident Ann-Marie Kelly, whose home- overlooks Glenabbey Parkette, said her family spent the entire entire summer there, having picnics and enjoying the surroundings. Her four-year-old daughter, Sara, like many other youngsters who flocked to the park, was impressed with the spray pad. "You just push the button over there and you get soaked," she said. In addition to the push-button fountain, the 1.5 acre parkette features a playground, gazebo, basketball court and a circular walkway through landscaped landscaped grounds and over a bridge. Earth modelling and rocks were employed to create a rolling landscape. landscape. "Over the last four or five years, we have seen major development in the Courtice area," Mayor Hamre said, adding that the municipality wants to ensure that there is enough green space for everyone as the community community continues to grow.
