8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. Wednesday, October 6,1993 B.H.S. Match But Outplays O'Neill Loses Close by Brad Kelly In the standings, Monday afternoon's afternoon's senior, boys' soccer game at Bowmanville High School was recorded recorded as two points for the visitors' from O'Neill. That was the only place O'Neill finished ahead of Bowmanville. Holding a huge advantage in territorial territorial play throughout much of the second half, Bowmanville couldn't manage to score the equalizer in a 1- 0 loss to O'Neill. Bowmanville won in every department department but on the scoreboard. They out-hustled their opponents and were first to gain possession of loose balls. "They played real well. You don't like to lose, but I have to be happy when they play dial well," said coach John Morris of his B.H.S. Unable to Score Match Equalizer UJÉ I ■ ,i ., j in Soccer 1 -0 Game team's effort. A goal by O'Neill in the first half somehow managed to be enough to record the victory. Had the game been extended another five minutes, Bowmanville may have just salvaged salvaged a tie. Bowmanville continually pressed O'Neill, hemming them in their end of the field for much of the later stages of the second half. But they couldn't finish any scoring chances they were given. "Usually we can finish a play around the net," said Morris of his team's lack of luck. The loss was only the second of the season for Bowmanville. Earlier this year, they recorded victories over Courtice and Eastdale, while playing to a draw with McLaughlin. Their only other loss came at the hands of Donevan. That was a game which coach Morris and his team would like to forget about. "During the season, every player will usually have one bad game. They just all picked that particular day to have it,' ' said Morris. Their record still keeps them in the hunt for a playoff spot in the nine-team East Division. The top four teams will advance to postseason postseason play. Bowmanville has a tough game at Paul Dwyer today, but still has two home games remaining against G.L. Roberts and General Vanier to close out the season. In the junior game on Monday, Bowmanville played to a 2-2 tie against O'Neill. Bowmanville's record is now 2-1-2. Loss is Learning Experience I by Brad Kelly The Courtice Secondary School junior girls' basketball team chalked up a loss to Msg. John Pereyma on Monday afternoon as just another learning experience. What they learned is they can't play just one good half in a game and expect to come away with a victory. victory. Pereyma opened the second half by scoring 10 unanswered points on their way to an easy 35-16 victory in front of a gymnasium full of Courtice Courtice supporters. Students were permitted permitted to buy their way out of the last class to attend the game. The loss dropped Courtice's record to 1-3 in LOSSA league play. Their only win of the season came against Gamier, while Central and Port Perry handed them the other two defeats. The results have been what coach Dave Butler has expected from his young team. "We only have two returning players from last year, so the whole team is young," he said. "Many of them arc still learning to play the game." . For being in the learning stages, they certainly played a strong first half. Both teams appeared nervous playing in front of a huge crowd in the opening quarter. Only six points were scored, four of those by Pereyma. Pereyma. That trend continued in the second second quarter, as Courtice trailed by only four points, 10-6. "That was the best half of basketball basketball we have played all year," said Butler. "It was a matter of us not shooting well. We would have been up by ten points if we had made some shots." Pereyma managed to pull ahead in the third quarter, stringing together together 10 points in a row. Danielle Stéfanis Stéfanis broke the string with 4:01 remaining remaining in the quarter to make the score 20-8. Courtice had trouble trying to work the ball upcourt through a Pcr- cyina press, which resulted in a number of turnovers. It helped Percy Percy ma oulscorc Courtice 12-4 in the third quarter and 13-6 over the final eight minutes of the fourth quarter. Trudy Bennett led Courtice with seven points. Hanah Reid had three, while Stéfanis, Jeni Willcox and Dawn Pittens chipped in with two each. With only three games remaining in the season, coach Butler isn't putting putting any pressure on his team to make a run for the final playoff spot. His goals are the same as they have been every year. "I want them to have fun and learn the game," he said. "They can be concerned with winning championships when they get to the senior level." Their next game will be on Monday, Monday, October 18, when they visit Exeter. Exeter.
