Paintings on Display At McLaughlin Gallery A selection of recent paintings by Canadian artist Richard Sturm will open at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery Gallery October 28. The public is invited to meet the artist at a reception to be held Thursday, October 28,7 - 9 p.m. Joan Murray, Director, has said about Richard Sturm "...Sturm's paintings are of different colour harmonics harmonics resonating through large dots, crisscrossed strokes, or flecks... There's no doubt that Richard Sturm is a new luminary, flexing his talent with a successful leap of vision. What is a surprise is the new-found- land he's wrestled back from the Post-modem painters. What he's telling telling us is an old message with a new twist: let there be light, but according to Stunn." But Stunn's work has its own signature signature style. What we sec when wc look at his paintings is a dazzling riot of colour: they have the brilliantly urgent urgent impact of Byzantine mosaics, an effect that's highlighted by the three- dimensional quality of his surfaces. , Underneath his surface layer, another layer of colour seemingly moves, suggesting that we arc looking at an unfolding story. In this, too, Sturm recalls mosaic artists. His work has a visual rhythm simultaneously joyous, tonic, and full of mysterious depth. Raised in Buffalo, New York, Richard Sturm is a resident of Peterborough, Peterborough, Ontario, and of Toronto. He studied in the BFA program at the State University of New York, Buffalo. Buffalo. Subsequently, he moved to Toronto Toronto and held a position as staff photographer photographer at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto.
