The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, October 23,1993 27 Six Foot Harvey on Stage of Port Perry Theatre The Borelians' Community Theatre Theatre of Port Perry is excited to bring to the stage HARVEY, a 1940'ies classic classic comedy, written by Mary Chase. This play is best known in the film version starring Jimmy Stewart. As a comedy, it is as pertinent to today as it in yesteryear. HARVEY is the name of an invisible six-foot plus pooka in the shape of a rabbit who has taken up residence with Elwood P. Dowd and Elwood's sister, Veta Louise and niece, Myrtle' Mae. The trouble starts with Harvey and Elwood's Elwood's unanticipated arrival at an afternoon afternoon party hosted by Veta Louise and Myrtle Mae. Veta Louise's desire desire for a "normal" life minus Harvey triggers a visit to Chumley's Rest, a Low Rates Forcing CSB Investors to Look Elsewhere for Low Risk Options By Peter A. This series of articles articles will address timely Investment issues pertinent to a broad range of investors. He can be reached at (905) 433-4227. The federal Department of Finance Finance has announced that the 1993 Series 48 Canada Savings Bonds (CSBs) will pay 4.25% for the first year. The rate of return for each of the next 1.1 years to maturity will be set each year when details of a new series are announced. Investors will be able to purchase up to $100,000 and can roll the entire principal amount of maturing Series 41 into the new series. So much for the details. details. Is this an attractive investment? To answer this, we must examine the alternatives, but first a little background. background. This month, there are record fixed income maturities. Over $60 billion in GICs, CSBs and Term Deposits are maturing. Many people are finding finding that the rates they can get arenas low as half what their maturing investments investments initially paid. The rollovers rollovers that were at one time automatic are now causing anxiety as those who depended on investment income find themselves faced with a bewildering number of alternatives. Further, many investors aren't aware that simple, simple, excellent alternatives to CSBs or GICs do exist. Credit Quality, Liquidity and Rate of Return are the key considerations Investors should be aware of the characteristics of each investment as they relate to credit quality, liquidity and rate of return. Remember that the CBS rate is only locked in for one year. Unless one requires instant liquidity liquidity at the price paid, CSBs compare compare poorly to other 1 year alternatives. alternatives. Regular Government of Canada Bonds pay over 1/2% better than CSBs, and Provincial Bonds slightly more than that. One has only a very minor sacrifice sacrifice in liquidity and has a substantial yield pick-up. In fact, by purchasing $100,000 of Government of Canada Bonds rather the CSBs, one will add $560 to one's annual income, an increase increase of 13%. As you can sec, even though the high returns of yesteryear arc no longer available, with a relatively relatively small effort, one can increase returns significantly. Of course, I have just scratched the surface of the alternatives available available to conservative investors, and will describe what's available and at what risk in future articles. private institution for people with mental health problems. Through a mix up, the wrong person gets committed. committed. All eventually is set right, but not without Harvey's intervention.
