When was the last time you took a good look at your fuse box or had your wiring inspected? If you're like, most homeowners, it's probably not something you lay awake at night thinking about. Most people tend to concentrate on other areas of home improvement. But, it you've ever had problems with any of your appliances or heard a funny, buzzing or crackling sound emanating from your fuse box, it's a good idea to get your system checked out by a qualified electrician or an electrical inspector. Left unchecked, fraying wires or loose connections can end up causing major problems and you could end up with a lot more expense on your hands than just the cost of a new circuit circuit box. In fact, many fires arc caused by overloaded circuits. Things to Consider If you have an older home with an older electrical service, you may want to consider changing your existing existing fuse panel over to a circuit breaker breaker system. That way, you don't have to worry about stocking up on replacement replacement fuses. And, if a circuit becomes overloaded overloaded (ie. two hairdryers being used at the same time on the same circuit), the circuit will automatically shut itself itself off. You can tell which one it is by looking at the circuit panel. To reactivate the outlet, you simply simply switch the circuit breaker back to "on". (But make sure you correct the overload situation first by unplugging one of the appliances - otherwise the circuit will tip itself off again). You may also want to upgrade your service, from 60 amp to 100 amp, or from 100 to 200 amp. This involves more work and you should talk to an expert to see it it's really necessary and exactly what the job will entail. Get Quotes Whatever route you decide to go, try to get quotes from three different electricians or electrical contractors. This should give you some comparative comparative pricing upon which to make your decision. Don't forget to factor in the cost of permits - and determine whether this is covered in your quote or not. If you're unfamiliar with the firms you're dealing with, you may want to check with the local branch of the Better Business Bureau to sec if any consumer complaints have been lodged against any of them. Keep Future Growth in Mind If you're having the panel changed, make sure the electricians install a box big enough to accommodate accommodate extra circuits. This way you have future capacity for many additional additional outlets. You may also want to add extra outlets at the same time as having your service upgraded, particularly particularly if your home is older and you've been relying on extension cords. Electrical safely experts warn you not to overload your outlets by plugging plugging in too many items via extension cords or outlet adapters. (In fact, extension extension cords should never be used as permanent wiring). Plugging too . many items into an outlet creates an "octopus" situation which can overload overload your circuits, overheat your wiring wiring - and possibly result in a fire. When considering the installation of new outlets, keep convenience and practicality in mind. GFCIs You should also consider having ground fault circuit interrupters installed. installed. This type of outlet shuts off power to a circuit when even small amounts of voltage are leaking. They are used in locations where water and electricity can converge (such as bathrooms and outdoor outlets). As a result, they help prevent electrical shocks. Once your electrician is on the job, don't be afraid to ask questions. After all, it's important that you un derstand the work that's being done. Also make sure that the work will be thoroughly checked out by a hydro inspector once the job is complete.
