The Martin Gerrits & Sons team were the seasonal and 'A' champions in the Peewee Division of the Newcastle Girls' Slo Pitch Association this past year. They were presented with their trophy at the league's banquet last Thursday night. The team's outstanding league record of 26 wins and 3 losses just goes to show how good Clarke's volleyball teams really are. "The reason we always have good teams is probably because of the amount of practice time the boys put in. The older boys also play a lot of club volleyball," said coach Dave ly our offence, but our defence is pretty weak," said the former Ontario Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men's volleyball coach of the year while at Seneca. Dobson considers this team to be average compared to last few teams he's coached, but average in his mind is a pretty good volleyball team to many of Clarke's opponents, opponents, as their record clearly shows. The coach says the key to a good volleyball team is "Hard work, dedication, dedication, a good work ethic, communication communication and the willingness to learn." In order to keep his team's interests interests up throughout the year, he likes to vary the practise and make everyone everyone different. Dobson is no stranger to volleyball. volleyball. He has coached various Clarke teams to COSSA titles. He has also coached at the collage level, club teams, and also is involved in the regional regional volleyball teams. So, if any coach is going to lead Clarke to another COSSA title in junior boys' volleyball, don't be too surprised if it is Dave Dobson. This year's junior boys' volleyball volleyball team is comprised of 13 members. members. They are: Ryan Booth, Ryan Dunnigan, Scott MacDonald, Corey Stapleton, Greg Hammond, Deepak Angl, Allan Lee, Doug McCurdy, Dave Thompson, Jamie Shetler, Kyle Colvile, Brian Landry and Daryl Daryl Burke. Clarke's next league game is at Cobourg West on Thursday, October October 28. They will be in the Kawar- tha Championships at Port Hope on November 10, hoping to start the road back to a COSSA championship. championship. Due to the lack of an assigned sponsorship, the second of these teams will be referred to as the Bowmanville #2 team. Hopefully, the team will have a sponsor very soon. The two Bowmanville teams met on October 12 and 13 for exhibition games. Thfc IGA team, coached by Mike Laverty, won the first game 4-2. The Bowmanville #2 team won the second 3-2, proving the two teams arc equally skilled in hockey. On Tuesday, October 19, the Bowmanville Bowmanville #2 team tried those skills out on the Orono Midgets, defeating them 4-3. Both goaltcndcrs shared this win, by Brad Kelly The soccer season for the Bowmanville Bowmanville High School junior boys' team ended on a disappointing note Monday afternoon. Facing Ajax in the LOSSA quarter-finals, quarter-finals, Bowmanville came out on the short end of a 3-1 score. After posting a 4-1-3 record during during regular season play, coach John Morris had high expectations for his club entering the playoffs. "Anytime you think you can advance advance further and you end up running running up against a good team, it's disappointing not to go on," said Morris. Ajax jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half of Monday's game, but Jason Dubeau tied the game on a free kick in the second half. Two goals by Ajax later in the half secured secured the victory. "(Ajax) deserved to go on," said Morris. "But, on a different day, it , could have been a different story." Morris and his team were hoping to conclude their jseason with a sto- i rybook finish. Losers of only one of X eight games during the regular sea- |p|nf ; they entered the playoffs-with a 'igfeat deal of confidence. } ? Contributing to that was their . performance in the final game of the .■schedule last Thursday on' their home field against Pereyma. In a lopsided affair, Adam Millar and Jamie Jamie Thompson combined for five goals in a 5-0 shutout. Millar scored both of his tallies in the opening half, while Thompson Thompson counted a hat-trick in the second half. "We have a lot of very talented players on this team," said Morris following the convincing win. "I can substitute anyone at any. time, and put players in a lot of different different places. I have no hesitation in substituting." The only substitution that Morris was unable to make with his team this year, but wishes he could, is the result in the final game.
