14 The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, November 6, 1993 Block Parent Organization Assists People of All Ages While many people may think of Block Parents as being only for children, children, that isn't the whole story. Muriel Moynes, of the Newcastle - Bowmanville Block Parent organization, organization, states: "Anyone who needs help can find assistance at the door of someone displaying our Block Parent .sign." A Block Parent brochure focusing on senior citizens states: "Seniors often often feel they are more vulnerable to crime than younger people. Actually, statistics prove seniors are victims of crime less often than younger people." When can seniors use the service provided by the Block Parents Organization? Organization? "When they are by themselves on the sidewalks and feeling faint, or need assistance because the weather has turned to severe conditions," Moynes said. "Block Parents are 'safe strangers' ,who are screened by the police before they are allowed into the program," Moynes noted. Since seniors spend more time at home than mothers of young children do now, they are also being looked at as the next people being targeted to become volunteers for Block Parents, Moynes said. Agreeing with Moynes was Dawn Larmer, of the Bowmanville Block Parent organization. "They don't have to leave their home," Larmer said. The group is looking for seniors willing to do book work and to serve on the organization's organization's Central (executive) Committee. Block Parents offer help from dangerous dangerous or frightening situations for children and adults alike, Moynes said. They assist persons by calling the police or someone else to help. They also assist the' police by reporting reporting suspicious or criminal activity in the neighborhood. They are not required to provide food or beverages, toilet facilities, transportation or first aid. Nor should they leave home to break up a fight. Children , and adults should know that they can use the Block Parent home when alarmed by strangers or vicious animals. They can call on Block Parents after an accident, when ill or lost, when being bullied or when caught in severe weather conditions. To begin the process to become a Block Parent in your neighborhood or to volunteer some of your time to the organization, (whether you are a senior senior or younger) 'call 623-7585 for more information. All dressed up and then they hit the mall! These clowns and all the other happy people were at the Bowmanville MaU to celebrate Block Parent Week in Clarington. While children's faces were painted, balloons and information on the Block Parents Program were given to their parents.
