The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, November 6,1993 7 Farm Woodlot Conference November 25 "Working with Trees" is the theme for the 3rd Annual Fall Farm Woodlot conference to be held again this year at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Trenton on Thursday, November's, November's, 1993 commencing with the viewing of displays and demonstrations demonstrations at 9:00 a.m. and the presentations presentations at 10:00 a.m. For the past two decades, farmers and other woodlot owners have taken an increasing interest in the management, management, utilization and marketing of forest crops from their woodlands. There were good reasons for this. It was partly due to increasing heating costs in the 1970's that many wood- lot owners focused attention back to the woodlot realizing there was an opportunity to reduce heating costs by producing and burning their own fuel wood. Many found good marketing marketing opportunities for the sale of it as well. Then, beginning in the early 1980's the development and expansion expansion of the small portable band sawmill sawmill industry provided hundreds of woodlot operators with cost effective machinery to produce their own lumber lumber and to provide sawmilling services services in their communities. In 1992, Ontario Maple Syrup Industry Industry produced a record crop of maple maple syrup worth nearly 21 million dollars to Ontario's maple producers. These facts, along with increasing softwood lumber prices and stump- age for some species like sugar maple maple in recent months, have greatly increased increased activity in the production of farm forest crops. Its a growth industry industry and that's encouraging for wood- - lot owners. In 1992, a new organization to represent the interests of those involved involved in the production, processing and marketing, of forest crops from private land was formed. This organization organization "The Ontario Woodlot and Sawmill Operators Association" is a non-profit organization dedicated to the wise and profitable use of Ontario's Ontario's private woodland resources.
