14 The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, November 20,1993 T-Ball Championship for Newcastle Public School Team Clarke and Port Hope Play In Battle of the Undefeated by Chad Maartense It was hyped up as the battle between between the two undefeated teams in the Lakeshore Hockey League. And when Clarke High School beat Port Hope High 6-4, they became became the only undefeated team.. Clarke now has three wins and two ties so far this season. Clarke put their unbeaten record on the line against Port Hope on Wednesday, November 17th, at Newcastle Arena. Clarke came out strongly in this contest, scoring just five minutes into the game when Brett Rogers hit an open Jeff Dar- rach at the red line. Darrach weaved through the defence and ripped a slapshot past the Port Hope goal- tender's glove hand. The game then became physical when Clarke defenseman Mike Rainford laid a great hit on a Port Hope player as he tried to break into the zone. Clarke went up 2-0 with four minutes to go in the first period on a goal by Trevor Lomax. Henry Kaldeway fed the puck to Lomax who skated in and put the puck over a sprawling goaltender. A minute later, Port Hope got on the board. Goaltender Chad Puk made the initial save, but the trailer was able to poke home the rebound To page 16 The Newcastle Village Public School Primary T-Ball Team won the House League title in October. During a school assembly in early November, the team members (back, 1-r) Adam Preece, Amber Co- glan, Ryan Tate, Brandon Malik and Adam Hearl along with (front, 1-r) Steven Ibbotson, Kyle Titterton, Campbell Prentice, Rena Maldd and Dylan Palmer got their reward -- ribbons. Missing from the photo photo are Mallory Doucet, Nathan Rogers and Jonathan Fowler. The Dodos, Dodos, as the team members called themselves, won by one point in the final game, said team coach Ruth Gray. FISCHER IN FINALS -- After missing the entire season a year ago after a serious knee injury, Newcastle native Richard Fischer is one victory away from claiming top honours in university football, the Vanier Cup. Richard and the rest of his teammates from the University of Toronto will face Calgary this Saturday, November 20, at Sky Dome to decide whom the best team in Canadian university football is. This past Saturday, Toronto eliminated Concordia in the semi-finals. Because such a sparse crowd was ,on hand, organizers of the Vanier Cup are concerned that the crowds may be small again for this Saturday. That would be an embarrassment to the U of T, who should be bringing a large contingent of students and alumni to the game. Where is their school spirit? - UNITED WAY BREAKFAST -- A popular fund-raiser over the past years during the United Way campaign has been their "Meet the Generals Breakfast," which has always been held in Oshawa. Well this year, the venue has changed. The Bowmanville Recreation Complex will play host to the 10th annual breakfast on Tuesday, November 30 beginning at 7:30 p.m. In addition to meeting some of the players on the Oshawa Generals, those attending will have the opportunity to listen to guest speaker Donald Crump, the Chief Financial Officer for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Maple Leaf Gardens. He is also the former commissioner of the Canadian Football League. Tickets for this event may be reserved by calling the Generals' Administrative Offices at 433-0900, or the United Way at 436-7377. FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT - This Sunday evening, during the Bowmanville Goodyear Eagles regular home game, it will be Fan Appreciation Appreciation Night. All young hockey players have received free tickets to the game. And, as an added bonus, there will be a 10-minute exhibition game featuring the Minor Tykes of the Bowmanville Recreation Hockey League. The Skylight Donuts team and the Beaver Lumber team will play in the intermission intermission between the first and second periods. If the exhibition minor hockey game proves successful, it could be staged more frequently in the future, during the Eagles home games. This Sunday, Bowmanville plays Little Britain.
