Premier Attends Opening of Skills Training Centre The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, November 20,1993 3 Recruitment of Volunteers Allows Brownsdale Centre to Stay Open Brownsdale Community Centre has avoided having to close its doors. The recruitment of new volunteers volunteers means that the centre should be able to continue operations. A report from Joe Caruana, Clar- ington's Director of Community Services, in this week's agenda for the General Purpose and Administration Administration Committee states: a meeting held on Wednesday, Sept. 29, ended on a positive note. A letter from the Secretary/ Treasurer, Fleurette Simmonds, also attests to this fact. In her letter to Jennifer Cooke, of the Community Services Department, Department, Simmonds wrote: "As a result of a new recruitment drive, we have a larger volunteer-base and the next step is to co-ordinate and delegate some of the activities. "As all of the members of the present executive work full-time, it is difficult to get the whole group together together at one time for a significant exchange of ideas." The session in late September was a "brainstorming" meeting "through which a number of ideas were generated and recorded for consideration later in the process," states the report from the Community Community Services Department. The meeting was called because the community centre board was having a hard time grappling with problems that were occurring at the time. One of the problems was the lack of sufficient volunteers to keep the centre running.
