I Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, December 1,1993 7 Happenings from Elizabethville Hampton Balson -- 697-2349 I received a call from a charter member of The Whilby/Oshawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Bessie Gannon was inquiring inquiring about the Tweedsmuir History Books. The Tweedsmuirs arc done by the Women's Institute branches. Each branch is asked to keep one. These books contain information about a village, town or city. In our ease, that's Hampton. Hampton's Tweedsmuir History Books arc very important because, as some of you know, a fire in the early 1900's destroyed destroyed valuable records of Hampton's Hampton's history. The first completed book starts with an actual picture of the first Hampton Women's Institute in 1903! I love the way the women dressed back then. It was noted that the Genealogical Society would be interested in storing the micro film copy of the Tweedsmuir History Books. This is important because if, fifty years down the road, the government government tears down the sign of Hampton and puts us into the melting pot, our true identity will never be forgotten. In talking with Bessie, she informed informed me that she helps the Abandoned Abandoned Cemetery Boards with identifying identifying the names on tombstones. Yes, Bessie did help with the cemetery on King Street here in Hampton. I should also mention that she has several several relatives buried there. The question question put forth is that cemetery now Hempton Youngsters Enjoy Children's Show The Doug Barr Children's Show came to the Hampton Junior Public Public School on Saturday, November 27, to launch another of the school's Cushion Concert Series. Doug brought along his four-piece Big Boy Band. And it didn't take long before the audience was dancing dancing in the aisles. Doug Barr has recorded over 60 original songs since 1985. The Saturday children's concerts continue in January with a production of Anne of Green Gables. In March, the series concludes with a performance by "Ronnon and Friends." Seats arc still available. available. Call the school for further information or, on weekends and evenings, call 263-8886 or 623-3486. I 1 I " » »■> looks pleasing to the eye, but is it safe? It seems as though several of the abandoned cemeteries have been built in this same manner and have been proven unsafe. In mentioning it to the supervisors, the buck was passed and nothing was done about it. Sound familiar? Apparently, there arc no inspectors to ensure stones arc placed in a manner that is correct and safe. There is currently no fence surrounding surrounding the abandoned cemetery in Hampton to deter young people from "playing" there. This may sound morbid to some of you older folks, but kids often let curiosity get the best of them. The reason for the lack of a fence is, I believe, that there is a dispute over the property lines. Sounds "like the government doing or taking whatever it wants again. It would certainly cause an Uproar if some kid was hurt because they were pushing, pulling or climbing on a supposedly solidly placed tombstone and it fell on him or her. Please pass this message of safety along. In doing research about the abandoned abandoned cemeteries, I have heard a few horror stories. Some are about the government ignoring the fact that an old cemetery is there and building roads right over them! This reinstates that fact that when my physical being is gone please cremate me. Now, onto some less thought- provoking news. The Hampton Youth Group met on Tuesday, November November 23rd. Werner and Doreen Wallruff graciously had the teens out to their house for a hayride. Everyone had a great time. The Wednesday Euchre Card Party Party is still going strong. The highest score for the evening was 86 earned by Marie Brooks. Ruby Smith was second with her score of 83. Tied for third was Shirley Brooks and Muriel. Butson both with 80. This was closely closely followed by Meta Swain with 79. Barry Brooks earned the Most Lone Hands with five. Ilccn Warder was the night's Most Honest Player. No one won the Special. The Draw winners were Daisy Bell, Meta 1 Swain, John Kuyer, Doreen Ferguson > and Agnes Schofield. On Sunday, November 28, at 7:30 p.m., a joint congregational meeting was held at the Hampton United Church. The pastoral committee presented presented the pastoral charge with a report report of the choices for a new minister in Hampton. The choices arc being narrowed down. It will be sad to see Reverend Warren and his wife leave. But, they will leave knowing a job has been well done. , For those of you not quick enough in buying the new chocolate mint Girl Guide cookies, you'll have to look elsewhere. The Hampton area has sold out. Orders for the cookies by the Guides had to be placed in May. It was very much a guessing - game. There- were thirty- eases--or- » dcred and all sold very quickly. For-, those of you who didn't get to try them, they were delicious. These cookies do not replace the "usual" Girl Guide cookies sold in the spring. The Hampton U.C.W. is currently selling shopping bags made out of heavy material. The bags have a picture picture of the Church and the old mill printed on them.
