10 The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, December 4,1993 Halminen Homes Fall Short in Bid to Reach Pickering Finals The Bowmanville Major Bantam Toros, sponsored by Halminen Homes, fell short in their bid to make the finals of a recent tournament held in Pickering. The team was lined up against Oshawa LNHL, Pickering and Lasalle in the 'B* Division. Games one and two gave the boys very little opposition. They beat .Oshawa by a 4-0 count and Pickering by a score of 5-0. Jeff Parry, for his shutout in game one, and Ryan Dunni- gan, for his hard work in game two, received MVP awards. Game one scorers were Nick Hand, Derek Arnold, Darryl Cook and Tony Butzer. Game two scorers were Arnold (2), Millar, Cory Scott and Jason Bray. Assists in games one and two went to Dunnigan (4), Butzer (2), Derek Lange (2), Cook, Adam Millar, Scott, Bray, Ryan Jobb, and Hand. In game three, the Toros were shutout shutout 6-0 by Lasalle. As the score suggests, suggests, the Toros were outplayed on the night against a strong Lasalle team who were also undefeated coming into the game, and whose defence had also not let in a goal. A disputed goal midway through the opening period opened the floodgates floodgates and Lasalle had built up a 4-0 lead at the end of one. They scored two more in the second before the Toros Toros managed to put the puck behind the Lasalle goalkeeper. But the buzzer hàd gone to end the second period, a split second before the puck crossed the line. This seemed to pick up the Toros, who managed to create a few chances of their own in the third while keeping Lasalle off the scoreboard. Bowmanville managed 10 points in the round robin, and advanced to the semi-final round against the Peterborough Peterborough Nats. This game was a very entertaining, fast-moving, hard-hitting affair which could have gone either way. The teams exchanged goals in both the first and second period, and it was at 2:22 of the third period before the Nats managed to seal the win. The Toros Toros tried desperately in the last two minutes to tie the score, even pulling their goalkeeper. But, despite several goalmouth scrambles, they could not find the back of the net. The final score was Nats 3, Toros 2. Lange and Jobb had the goals, while Cook (2), Lange and Cappuccit- ti had assists. Chris Cappuccitti received MVP honours for these last two games. In league action play, the Toros were defeated 4-3 by Ajax. In'a tight game that was tied at 3-3 in the third, the Toros were called for a number of penalties that left them two men short on three occasions. This swung play to Ajax, and although they were not able to capitalize on these situations, they finally got the winner with just 43 seconds left in the game. Goal scorers were Butzer, Jobb and Matt Staley. Assists went to Scott (2), and Lange. The Toros' next home game is Tuesday, December 7, against Markham. Markham.
