The least of which was one where he produced a live rabbit apparently out of thin air. Children whose families are helped by the Easter Seals Foundation were guests of Rotarians at the annual event held at the Lions Centre. Hydro-Electric Commission Demands Removal of GST The Clarington Hydro-Electric Commission isn't going to let the Liberals forget their pre-election promise to scrap the GST. The Municipal Electric Association Association is calling on all utilities to join a letter-writing campaign to the federal federal government demanding that the Goods and Services Tax be removed from residents' electricity bills. Dave Clark, manager of the Clarington Clarington Hydro Commission, says the local commission plans to join the mass mailing.. Clark hasn't forgotten the many complaints that accompanied the implementation of the GST more than three years ago. "Electricity was never taxed prior to this," he said. And, to make matters worse for the consumer, the GST was ushered in during a year when many utilities had to pass on significant rate in creases to their customers as well, Clark noted. "At some utilities, the rates went up by 18% just that one year, including including the GST." Electric service should be looked at on a parallel with water service, Clark suggests. The GST is not applied applied to water bills, since water supply supply is considered an essential service. service. The Municipal Electric Association Association has circulated a memo to utilities utilities around the province which recalls recalls the Liberal Party's public criticism of the tax and its administration administration costs during the recent election election campaign. The memo refers to Prime Minister Minister Jean Chretien's stated commitment commitment to eliminating the GST and his pledge to replace it with a new system system of revenue generation. But the CHEC remains adamant oii complete INSTALLATIONS iiaisiBliiiia that electrical services should not be taxed under any new system either. The president and the chairman of the MEA state in the November 18 th memo: "On behalf of the MEA, we have written to the new Prime Minister, the Minister of Finance, the Minister Minister of National Revenue and the Minister of Natural Resources, renewing renewing our call for the elimination of the GST from electricity and an exemption for electricity from the new system of taxation. "We are calling on all utilities to join in this effort. We have all witnessed witnessed the power of joint action. When utilities en masse speak as one, governments listen. Just recall our recent success in convincing the provincial government to allow utilities utilities to keep their Social Contract savings in the system for the benefit of customers." Dave Clark expressed his hope that the letter-writing campaign will be successful.
