8 The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Friday, December 24,1993 Union Oil Novices Capture "A" Title in Bewdley Tourney The BRHL Union Oil Novice House League team competed in a tournament in Bewdley on December December 11. The team of 8 and 9-year- olds had a very successful day and came home with the 'A' championship championship trophy. The first game of the day was against Newcastle, and though Union Union Oil was outshot, they persevered and were able to outscore Newcastle, Newcastle, winning the game 3-2. Credit goes to Bryan Hutchison, our goalie, for an incredible performance in net. Matt Allen started off the scoring with a goal, followed by David Brown with two goals. The final two games were against the hometown Bewdley teams. First, Union Oil played Bewdley #2, and, due to a, strong effort from all players, beat them 7-3. Bewdley actually held a 1-0 lead for almost half the game, until Justin Roussy led off the scoring with a goal. It was heart-warming to see two players, Lee Paterson and B.J. Brown, score their first goals of the year. The other goal-scorers were Matt Allen with one, Justin Roussy added a second goal, and David Brown had two as well. The championship game against Bewdley #1 was an incredibly close match. Every time Union Oil went ahead by a goal, Bewdley rallied with a goal. Going into the third period, the score was tied 3-3, but Union Oil players pulled ahead and won the contest (and the tournament) with a final score of 7-4. Throughout the games, defensively defensively the team was rewarded with fine performances from Erik Downing, Downing, Sarah Connelly, Tyler Calhoun, B.J. Brown, Ryan Lubitz, and Jeremy Jeremy Hynes. Offensively, David Brown was duly recognized for his efforts, earning earning the MVP trophy for the tourna ment with nine goals, five of which came in the championship game. Matt Allen and Jesse Millson also scored goals in the final game, with strong support provided from Justin Roussy, Joshua Shephard, Riley Riley Elliot, Brian Wilson, Lee Paterson Paterson and Steven Sendall. Union Oil has also been successful successful in their regular league games, with seven wins and only one loss. Carnation Atoms Take on Hutton On Saturday morning, December 18, Carnation Atoms faced off against an improved Hutton Transport Transport in a game that started off as a goaltenders' duel.
