16 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, January 12.1994 Few Ring in New Year Community Correspondence. News from Yelverton Happenings in Hampton by Michelle Baison - For those of you looking for "Happenings in Hampton" in last week's paper sorry to have disappointed disappointed you. There really wasn't much to report so I thought I'd just take the week off. I'm back now with my first report of this new and hopeful hopeful year of 1994. The Hampton Community Association Association had a low attendance of about 30 people ringing in the new year. It is doubtful that many more adult dances will be held. The young people's people's dances, however, arc still going strong. One or two a month will continue continue to be planned based on the supply supply and demand. Meaning the kids are always ready to enjoy an evening of fun as long as the parents continue to help supervise. The first Wednesday Euchre Card Party of 1994 had eight tables of players. The highest score of 84 was earned by Grace McGill. Tied for second place with scores of 83 were Ailccn Turner and Richard Manns. This was followed by Eldon McKay with 78 and Carl Ferguson with 75. Marie Brooks had the Most Lone Hands of five. The night's Most Honest Honest Player was John Kuycr. No one won the Special. The Draw winners, were Richard Manns, Wilma Goync, John Kuycr, Grace Murdock and Grace McGill. This next piece is a blast for the past and was written by ten year old Jennifer Page who is a second year Girl Guide. On Thursday, December 16, 1993, the First Hampton Guides went to Theriaut Home of Special Care. We met at the Church at 6:30 p.m. and returned at 8:15 p.m. The location is at Mitchell's Comer. Leaders and parents drove us. We sang Christmas Carols. We gave them yogurt containers which we decorated. H8H By Harvey Malcolm Thought for the Month Remember the talent of Success is nothing more than doing what you can do well whatever you do. - Longfellow. Longfellow. Always do your best and be dcs- tinguished above the rest - Homer. Tongue in cheek, wc remind all and Sundry that this is the Season for Revolutions - That's right - Revolutions. Revolutions. The time we revise all those Resolutions Resolutions we didn't keep last year to- treat them similarly this year. We were so impressed with Dr. Gilford Jones' suggestions two years ago, we are tempted to repeat in abbreviation, some of his suggestions. Number One - Start New Year's with a "Chuckle" if you can't afford a belly laugh because your girdle's too tight. Laughter triggers the release release of endorphins to the brain which are natural pain killers and relievers relievers of stress. If you have high blood pressure get a dog. Petting your own dog lowers lowers blood pressure once you start stroking its soft fur. Eat lots of food loaded with potassium potassium rhubarb, apricots, yogurt etc. - Yuk! It prevents hypertension and strokes. If you have the urge to go to the bathroom - do so immediately. An Israeli Israeli study shows "holding it contrib utes to bladder cancer." Women should regularly perform self examination of their breasts to detect early malignancies. Avoid needless X-rays and resultant resultant radiation. Get a tetanus shot every 10 years whether you need it or not. Don't take an escalator unless you, only have one week to live - particularly particularly if you have a desk job. Don't stand up in a boat to have a pee. Fishing is second only to swimming swimming as a cause of drowning. Pick a doctor who listens to your bellyaching; if not satisfied, change your doctor. Speaking of Resolutions - Resolutions Resolutions to attend our local church every Sunday were obviously not high on too many priorities, judging from the small turnout on Sunday. Reverend Ross Benns provided an interesting discourse on the significance of the wise men. Doris Rowan - organist for the day provided a stirring rendition of "There is no secret what God can do" on the electric organ. The portion of the service that tickled our facetious funny-bone was the answer given by one of the Sunday School children to Reverend Benns when he asked what the three Wiscmcn brought to Bethlehem Bethlehem at the birth of Christ. The reply reply was - "Gold, Frankenstein and a Mirror"! Guess one out of three ain't bad! Welcome home to Marleah and Jack Burton who have just returned from spending 10 days in England visiting Jack's mother and other relatives. relatives. Terry and Brenda Malcolm got a jump start on the New Year by taking off New. Year's day for a holiday in St. Maartin in the Caribbean. In case you haven't been there the Island is divided between the Dutch portion and the French speaking residents. It is well known for its plentiful small shops (duty free), it's balmy weather, sandy beaches and in the French portion portion - the dress (or undress) optional on its beaches. Sorry to learn that both Ernestine and Ray Robinson of our community have each had health problems this past week, necessitating their being temporarily admitted into the hospital on several occasions. Trust their recovery recovery will be a quick one. Mr. and Mrs. Oral Quackenbush were New Year's Day guests of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Quackenbush and family in Lindsay on Saturday. While many residents limited their welcoming the New Year in a more subdued manner on the Home Front, or visiting with close friends, a number number of us hardier types continue to celebrate the advent of 1994 by letting letting our hair down (metaphorically speaking only in our case) by attending attending one of the many dances that occurred occurred in the general area.
