They dropped two league games, but managed an exhibition victory in what local hockey experts were touting as their best performance of the season. Friday, January 7, Orono hosted the Mariposa Lightning in a league encounter and emerged 4-1 losers. Badly outplayed and outshot 12-2 Family Auto got their only goal, a shorthanded effort by team captain Bob Witheridge, at 6:14 of the first period. Assisting on the play was defenceman Greg Bester. The Lightning Lightning tied it at 1-1 with just five seconds seconds remaining in the period and , went on to add three more goals in the final frame to seal the win. Twice in one week, they have had a three- goal lead late in the second period, only to let their opponents come back and tie. But Sunday, in Whitby, it was a different story. The first goal resulted from a heads-up play by Steve Ewles. Showing a lot of hustle, he retrieved a loose puck. Striding over the blueline, blueline, he let a quick shot go that found its way to Dan MacDonald's stick. He managed to find a hole to slip it in the net. New Year Starts With Victories for Checkers Variety The Checkers Variety Major Novice Toros started the New Year with a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Whitby in league play. Zach Thoraval (lg, 2a), Trevor Baker (lg, la), Jamie Bryant (lg), Matt Gross, (lg), Garrett McKnight (2a), Brett McKee (2a), and Justin Naklicki (la), handled the scoring. On January 8, during Young Canada Day, Checkers Variety defeated defeated Oshawa LNHL Bruins 6-1. Trevor Baker and Garrett McKnight had two apiece. Singles went to Adam Bowen and Brett McKee. Assists Assists went to Jamie Bryant (3), Brett McKee, Adam Bowen and Sean Le- fort. A special mention goes to the players and coaching staff for their outstanding effort in the Checkers Variety Christmas Classic, ending up 'A' finalists. Very deserving for a total team effort. Going with a ' depleted bench of only eight skaters, Manvers took advantage of Orono's over confidence early in the game as they led 4-1 after the first period. Orono got a goal back in the middle frame and seemed to have the momentum, momentum, trailing 4-2 into the final frame. However after having what looked like a third goal for Family Auto, it was called back by the officials officials and their luck ran out. Manvers quickly took advantage of a couple of Orono defensive miscues and cashed in two more just two minutes into the third period. Family Auto chipped away and got two goals back late in the game, but fell short, losing by a 6-4 final.
