The singing of the Ode and repeating repeating of the Lord's Prayer followed. The Roll Call was 'Something new I have learned in the past year. ' Minutes were read and approved and financial report given. It was decided decided to give half of our yearly donation donation to our church at this time, as regards regards our use of hall. II By Mary Fraser Life in the clouds is a definite high for Tom Morawetz. Speaking to members of The Canadian Club on Wednesday, January 12, at St. Paul's United Church, in Bowmanville. Mr, Morawetz left little doubt about his enthusiasm for flying. Although from a background firmly firmly rooted in the earth, the president of Evergreen Farm and Garden Ltd. nevertheless has been an avid aviator since 1985., The proud owner of a six-seater Cessna 206, Mr. Morawetz entertained his audience with ac- ! counts of humorous escapades in the ! cockpit, beginning with basic training I and progressing to tales of transport- j ing a growing family to the sunny 't south while fighting the blizzards en- f.' route. 'I "In storms, fog and clouds, a pilot i l can become completely disoriented 1 and must depend upon his instrument panel," said Mr. Morawetz, recalling i-. ,a training session inside a cloud. "The 'artificial horizon' on my ini' ini' strument panel showed the lake I , thought was beneath me, to be beside " me instead. I flew out of that cloûd, certain the panel was wrong, but...guess what? It was then I was reminded by my instructor that a pilot pilot who doesn't believe his instrument instrument panel might as well radio ahead and order the flowers for his funeral." J.,, . Another, bit,', of wisdom a .flyer ., soon learns is the meaning of the saying: saying: "Time to spare? Go by air". A trip to Florida, which normally should have taken the Morawetz fam- • ily less than a day, turned out to be a three-day journey, with the unpredict able weather the villain, as usual. Snow squalls often mean unexpected unexpected stop-overs in the most unlikely unlikely places. Mr. Morawetz told of an emergency night landing near a sleepy North Carolina town where taxis only operated in the daytime, and a very intimidating state trooper, sent to help, forgot to explain why he was there. Mr. Morawetz spoke with particular particular enthusiasm about the family's annual annual trip to Oshkosh Wisconsin, home of a spectacular air show. This event attracts over a million people from all over the world. "We camp underneath the wing of our plane, in a large field," Mr. Morawetz Morawetz said, adding that the family always always has plenty of company. "There are about 40,000 of us altogether." For an aviator, this show is about as close as it gets to heaven. Every possible kind of airplane is on display, display, from vintage craft from the twenties to completely reconditioned World War II bombers and on to designs designs as modem as the Concord. "Watching this machine land from two hundred yards away and having the chance to tour the inside is a special special kind of thrill for an aviator." Mr. Morawetz reminded his audience audience about the old "Lockheed Constellation", Constellation", also on view at the show. This luxurious transatlantic propeller airplane was equipped with large comfortable' seats, sleeping berths and "aisles wide enough for a feed cart to go up and down." It carried 5,800 gallons of fuel, a not unreasonable unreasonable amount considering that it burned 400 gallons per hour. WARNING! "We land a short while later in such places as Lindsay, Peterborough, Peterborough, Banrie and Elmhurst and enjoy a great breakfast together. We feel very fortunate to have such wonderful wonderful friends,"- added Mr. Morawetz, explaining that his only problem with these outings is the challenge to make it back in time for an eleven o'clock church service. Flying, Mr. Morawetz is convinced, convinced, heightens an awareness of nature's nature's beauty, develops an appreciation appreciation of the world from a different perspective, and is a marvellous shared experience for families. True understanding understanding needs constant fostering. It needs tolerance, patience, good will as well as common sense. We cannot have friendship alone in our homes, we have to have understanding, understanding, be able to see the others' point of view. _ If this will work in our homes, it will surely work in our communities, our churches and the great wide world out there of which we are all a part. Mrs. Hall introduced Shirley Cain of Hoskin Stables at Blackstock. Working with special needs children children began at their stables in 1979, but it was actually started in Ontario 20 years ago.
