8 The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, January 29,1994 Orono Family Auto Atoms Compete at Annual Peterborough Tournament Orono Family Auto Sales advanced advanced to the quarter-final consolation round in Peterborough's 120 Atom team annual Liftlock Tournament this past weekend. Orono dropped their first game to a tenaciously-checking Bancroft club. Family Auto bounced back, however, defeating St. James in the second game, and trouncing a weak Warsaw entry in game three. Highlighting the tournament was the fourth game against the Bowmanville Bowmanville Toros 'AA' minors. The winner would advance to the semi-finals. Orono held a 1-0 lead midway through the third period. Toros' Philip Fracz tied it at 1-1, with just over five minutes remaining. The score held up after regulation time. This set the stage for a sudden-death overtime. The Toros found their second wind and pressed hard, with a man advantage advantage for nine of the 10 extra minutes of play, but to no avail. Badly outshot 14-5 after two periods of overthne, Family Auto hung tough, forcing yet a third period of overtime. The excitement at this point was at a feverish pitch, as both fans and players alike were gasping for air on every play. Mercifully, it ended with just 39 seconds remaining in the game's sixth period of hockey as the Toros' Tyson Reynolds cashed in his team's 20th overtime shot on goal. It was a heart-breaker for Family Auto, but a prelude to what to expect in the forthcoming playoffs. Thanks again to the coaching staff of John Witheridge, Dave McGlynn, Pete Landers, Kevin O'Halloran, and Ray Bester. In particular, thanks' go to the boys for providing the parents and fans with such exciting and entertaining entertaining hockey. Results from the tournament.
