With the, unusual weather of last Thursday and Friday, bitter cold, then rain and ice, we here in Orono had no garbage pick-up, so needless to say, the dogs are having lots of fun! We were fortunate to not lose our hydro, as so many other areas did! Belated congratulations to Martin and Verna Dwyer, Pontypool on their very large wind fall! Have known Verna since she was a little girl. Mr. and Mrs. Bill McNaul, Oshawa, were last Tuesday visitors with Mrs. Dorothy Bailey and Mrs. E. Billings on their way to Florida for holidays. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Taylor, Scarborough; Scarborough; were last Tuesday luncheon guests of Mrs. Edith Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kimmett and Rebecca, Lindsay were Saturday callers callers with Mrs. Billings and Mrs. Bailey. Bailey. Orono Fish and Hunt Club Members of the Orono Fish and Hunt Club hosted their "Target Day", Saturday, January 29, at the club on Kirby Rd. Thirteen scouts and leaders, leaders, Dave Davies and several fathers. On a beautiful cold winter's day, the Boy Scouts learned all about firearms, firearms, safety rules, and target practice, using 22. rifles. All under close supervision supervision of range masters. First time applicants should pick up forms early in February and March, as camp enrolments arc quickly filled. Our new playschool is now in full swing and uses upstairs hall every day. The 1st Orono Beavers and Cubs meet in Orono United Church Monday Monday 6:30-8 p.m. There are 22 Beavers and 13 cubs and many dedicated leaders, who give of their time. By Jacqueline Vaneyk Some of you reading this will remember remember Jack and Olive Hills and their five girls, who lived in the village village and over to the west some years ago. Mrs. Hills has been living in Strathaven since moving from Mill- brook. She passed away on Friday at the age of ninety five. Sympathy is extended to the Hills and Bellman families. Tyrone church annual congregational congregational meeting was held on Sunday following the service and a bountiful hot lunch organized by the Worship committee and other volunteers. Copies Copies of the annual reports are available m at the church. The 125th Anniversary celebrations and the old books and records are creating a lot of interest. Plans are afoot to redo the church floor and purchase new runners. A Bible project for children will also be carefully considered. The personnel register is full and we are fairly sound financially at the moment (emphasis (emphasis on the last three words). The whole church council will meet on Thursday, March 3 with committee meetings at 7:30 p.m. and the council as a whole at 8:30. Please make this a priority in your schedule. Sedgwick Sedgwick in charge. After the customary opening, he read the first lesson from Mark 1 about Jonah and the whale. Mr. Sedgwick's sermon was about a divine change of heart. The congregation meeting at Garden Garden Hill United Church will be held Feb. 2nd, Canton's is Feb. 3rd and Welcome's on Feb. 6th - all at 7:30 p.m. On Thursday, the seniors held their meeting, with 23 attending. Next is our monthly birthday Pot luck and also it is a meeting to elect a new slate of officers or re-elect the present ones. Orley Mercer came home from hospital on Thursday and has had some callers. Vivian and Howard Quantrill were there on Friday. Sunday School was held at Elizabethville Elizabethville on Sunday, but not too many attended. Susan and Jackson Peacock, Mary Gardiner, Eileen Barkwell and several others from Garden Hill attended the Historical Society meeting in Port Hope last Wednesday. Our Presbyterial is this week at Warkworth and Bertha Trew hopes to be able to go if the weather is O.K. Sophia and Shane Peacock had dinner with Jackson and Susan on their way to Montreal. Margarette Walker returned home from a two week holiday at St. Maart- ens on the Caribbean sea, along with several friends. Bill and Marie Terbenche and Suzanne" Suzanne" were here with me on Sunday. Doris Gunby was with her mother. Irene Beatty on the week end. June is improving. She, the two girls and a friend hope to go on a cruise at the middle of February. ' By Joyce Kelly Plans are being finalized for the annual Robert Fletcher Memorial Bonspiel which will be held this coming Saturday, February 5 at the local arena. There are still spaces available for the curling. Tickets are also available to attend the roast beef dinner and/or dance to the sounds of Bakerline Disc Jockey Services. A great mid-winter event to fight the blahs. Do plan to take part in all or part of this fun day. A long-time resident of Cartwright, Cartwright, Norman Samells, passed away last week. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Adams and Mrs. Flora Samells attended attended the funeral in Port Perry on Friday afternoon. Several of his former former neighbours also attended. On Saturday evening a surprise dinner party celebrated Keith Van- Camp's "special" birthday. This dinner, dinner, held at the home of his daughter Cindy and Dennis Worry, Robert and John, Kedron, was attended by quite a number of family and friends. Last Friday evening, another surprise surprise birthiday party was held in honor honor of John Green's 30th birthday. Happy Birthday greetings to both Keith and John. Glad to report that Lloyd Trewin has returned home to continue his recovery recovery following surgery in Sunny- brook Hospital. Take care of yourself, yourself, Lloyd. There were 12 tables at the weekly weekly card party with the following winners: winners: Margaret Finney, Alma Manns, Thomas Manns, Eileen Warder, Ruby Cochrane, Norman Rohrer and Carl Ferguson. Lucky draws were won by Loma Bright, John Archer, j Carl Ferguson, Jim Emerton, Faith \Lawrence and Muriel Buts on. 1 Helen and Stuart Dorrell were mid-week visitors of their son Darcy and Laura Dorell and family of Charlton. On the way home they met up with the severe winter storm and had to make an overnight stop at North Bay. Gerald and Joyce Kelly were midweek midweek visitors of their daughter Esther Kelly who is a student at the Faculty of Education, Ottawa University. While there they enjoyed attending two sessions of the Ontario Scott Tournament of Hearts Ladies Curling Competition at the Ottawa Curling Club. As the students of Cartwright High School begin their second semester, semester, they will be meeting their new principal Mr. L. Plue, who is coming on Monday to take over the duties. Former principal Mrs. M. Pe- tursson is moving to become principal principal of O'Neill C.V.I., Oshawa. As she leaves, she takes much respect and administration of students, staff and community. We will miss you! be sold and there will be none available available at the door. Call now! The service on February 20 at 2 p.m. (note the time) should be quite interesting and informative. Each of the five churches once on the circuit - Providence, Bethesda, Long Sault, Haydon and Salem - will be represented, represented, and a brief presentation will be made about each. There will be time for recollection, questions and visiting over tea and cookies in the SS rooms following the service. We hope that all those interested in the history of any of these churches will come and bring your memories and memorabilia. The time period we arc looking at is 1925 to the early fifties, so dig out your flapper dresses and your summer skimmers! Michelle Hofman will not be at the church from February 7 to February February 14. Reverend John Brown of Port Perry will be taking our service on the 13th. Tyrone Community Centre needs a good turnout for their annual meeting meeting on Tuesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. This meeting was postponed from an earlier date. Community Centres, Churches and the like do not run themselves. It takes commitment on the part of the community members to keep them going. So, let's have some support! Bethesda Cemetery Board is hosting hosting their annual public meeting on. Monday, February 14, 7:30 p.m. at the Sunday School room. Guest Speaker will be Cory Kuipers, with the latest information on funerals. Everyone is welcome to come and hear Cory, and to ask questions or give input to the Cemetery Board. The by-laws of the Cemetery have been updated and need to be looked at carefully before they are sent to the Ministry for approval.
