The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, February 9,1994 9 Volleyball Teams Serve Up Medals at Annual Kinsmen Tournament Members of the boys' volleyball team at Vincent Massey School were double winners recently. They captured the Bowmanville Junior School championship tournament, beating Lord Elgin in the finals two games to one. In round robin play, they compiled a 7-1 record. Then, at the Kinsmen tournament this past weekend, they won consolation medallions. Members of this successful team are, front row, (1-r), Jesse Parsons, Andrew Damant, Peter Andreas, Sean Mitchell. This team from Central Public School won the silver medal at the Kinsmen volleyball tournament that was held on Friday evening. Michael Richardson Records Hat-trick - Hand Belleville 7-2 Loss The Bowmanville Optimist Club Tyke Selects met the Belleville Selects Selects for the third time this season on Saturday, January 29. On this occasion, occasion, the Bowmanville Selects clearly established themselves as the superior team, with a convincing 7-2 victory. After falling behind on an early Belleville goal, Bowmanville tied the game when Chris Boyce flipped the puck over the Belleville goaltender to Finish off a nice rush by Matt Mitchell. Mitchell. Matt Best also assisted on the play, and the first period ended in a 1- 1 tie. Early in the second period, Belleville Belleville drew a penalty and managed to score while shorthanded. Bowmanville Bowmanville then took a penalty to create a four-on-four situation, and Rene Carti er took advantage of the open ice to score on a breakaway, knotting the game at two goals apiece. The pace of the game at this point was fairly fast, in spite of a flurry of penalties to both sides. Gord Baird was steady in goal, stopping five of the seven shots he faced. Justin Andrews made a difficult screen save on the first shot he faced upon entering the game midway through the period. Bowmanville went ahead 3-2 before the period ended on Michael Richardson's first of three, assisted by Bryan Barchard. The third period was all Bowmanville, Bowmanville, as the parents turned up the cheering and chanting and were rewarded rewarded with four more goals by the boys, all unanswered by Belleville. Adam Cull started the onslaught, assisted by Adam Cryderman and Matt Mitchell. Hard work by Chris Boyce led to Michael Richardson's second goal, with Bryan Barchard also drawing an assist. This was followed followed by an unassisted goal by Matt Best. Richardson then completed his hat-trick, assisted again by Barchard along with Rene Cartier. The final shots on goal were 12-10 in Bowmanville's favour, but the game really turned on the ability of our boys to play as a team. The weekend of February 5-6 was unusual in that the BRHL Optimist Tyke Selects did not play a game, due to a tournament booked into the Newcastle Newcastle Arena. The team will return to action on Saturday, February 12, against an opponent from Ajax. Calhoun. ^ Everfresh Eliminated From OMHA Playoffs Everfresh Juice played Orono on Tuesday, February 1. This game was almost as intense as the tournament game in Peterborough. The Toros came out ahead in this game 3-2. Goals -- Josh Couture (2), Tyson Crocker. Assists - Darryl Steele (2), Tyson Crocker Everfresh started their playoffs on February 4, and ended February 5, going going down two straight games to Pickering. Pickering. In the first game, the Toros lost 5- 0, and in the second game they lost 5- 3. Goals in the second game went to Martin Frampton, Tyson Crocker and Nat Fair. Assists to Jonathan Ross, Jeff Reynolds, Darryl Steele, Nat Fair, Josh Couture, and Justin Osborne. The Everfresh Juice team will now continue playoffs in the York-Simcoe League. Hooper's Ties Dykstra's 1-1 A hard-fought battle between Hooper's Trophies and Dykstra's Deli was held February 5 at Bowmanville Arena. Hooper's opened the scoring in the first period on a goal from Mark Gan- hao, assisted by Steve LaFlammc. Dykstra's came back with a double later in the first period, taking the lead 2-1. Dykslra's added one more to their lead in the second before Hooper's responded responded with another goal from Mark Ganhao, assisted by Andrew Laton in the third. In spite of a good team effort, effort, the final score was a disappointing disappointing Dykstra's 3, Hooper's 2. The following day, Hooper's met Port Hope Swiss Chalet in an exhibition exhibition game at Orono Arena. End-to-end action resulted in exciting exciting play, but little scoring. Port Hope led the score 1-0 until the beginning of the third period when Antonio Stra- vato, assisted by Andrew Laton and Mark Ganhao, tied the score at 1-1. Both teams had many close scoring opportunities, but the final score remained remained tied 1-1. Trips During March Break Promise to Keep Kids Busy So, you're sitting at home scanning the monthly calendar, and contemplating contemplating what to do to keep the kids occupied during the upcoming March Break. In these times of fiscal restraint, taking a week's leave of absence from work to stay home would be a financial disaster. Grandma and Grandpa have long since packed their bags for the sunnier climates of Florida. And, it's just too dam cold outside to expect them to wait in the car behind the office. The Community Services Department may be the answer to your prayers. In recognition of the week from March 14-18, they have constructed a package that may be their best ever. It is the 11th Annual March Break Bonanza for children aged 6-13. "We by to make a week that will appeal to all different ages," explained explained Community Services Program Manager, Scott Rose. "We try and entice people to register by not only offering trips that are educational, educational, but also fun." . Rose, along with Joe Vajda, a co-op student from the sports administration administration program at Durham College, have put together a well-balanced package with lots of options for the kids. Included in the many activities planned are ice and roller skating, movies, movies, a trip to SkyDome, another trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame, as well as to the Royal Ontario-Museum, Ontario Science Centre and Metro Zoo. For those who would like to stay a little closer to home, a day camp program will be operating at the Recreation Complex each day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For the convenience of parents, children can be dropped off as early as 8:00 a.m., and picked up as late as 5:00 p.m. Under the supervision of qualified day camp counsellors, a number of fun activities including ice skating, movies, games and crafts will entertain entertain the children for the day. A daily fee of $15 will be charged, or $60 for the entire week. For the adventurous ones, nowhere will you get the variety of individual individual day trip packages that have been arranged. To begin the week on Monday, there is a visit to Toronto's SkyDome where the two-time World Champion Toronto Blue Jays reside. The tour includes visits to the private boxes, the media centre and SkyClub. In the afternoon, there will be a swim at the Fitness Centre Pool. And, to top the day off, the trip will conclude at Liberty Bowl on Baseline Road in Bowmanville for a few frames. Tuesday brings a trip to the beautiful Hockey Hall of Fame. Opportunities Opportunities to call your own play-by-play, Lake photos of the Stanley Cup, or test your shot at targets await everyone. In keeping with the skating theme, the trip includes roller skating at Whcclics in the afternoon. Bring your in-line skates, or rent skates at the site. The Ontario Science Centre and the Metro Zoo comprise Wednesday's Wednesday's trip. On Thursday, the Royal Ontario Museum and McLaughlin Planetarium arc the destinations. The week concludes on Friday with a visit to Kortright Centre for its maple syrup and sugar bush. In the afternoon, it's over to Whcclics for more roller skating, Each daily trip begins and ends at the Recreation Complex, and is priced at $25, with a reduced price of $100 for a package of all five. Registrations Registrations for the day trips are limited to 35 children, Participants arc required to dress appropriately, and to bring a lunch and drink to both die day camp programs and day trip packages. Registration forms are available in the Community Services Spring/ Summer Activity Guide, or at the office located on the (bird floor of the Municipal Administrative Building. If there is something better out there, we have yet to hear about it.
